Description
The Marketing Specialist II performs professional-level public information, marketing and digital communications work in support of Citywide programs, services, projects and initiatives. The position develops and implements communications campaigns; creates and manages digital, print and multimedia content; supports the City's website and social media platforms; assists with media relations and emergency communications; and works collaboratively with City departments to communicate timely, accurate and accessible information to the public.
Under general direction of the Marketing Manager, the position manages assigned communications projects and serves as a professional communications resource to City departments. This position exercises no direct supervision but may provide technical and functional direction to City staff, contractors and vendors.
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Implements and supports the consistent application of the City's brand and established Citywide communications initiatives;
- Develops and implements marketing and public information campaigns to promote City programs, services, activities, events, projects, and initiatives;
- Manages assigned communications projects from concept through completion, including developing production schedules, coordinating stakeholders and approvals, tracking project expenditures, and ensuring projects are completed according to schedule;
- Creates, edits, publishes and maintains content on the City's website and other digital platforms; coordinates with departments to maintain accurate, timely, user-friendly and accessible online information; and assists with website governance, content quality, search optimization and continuous improvement;
- Develops and implements assigned community outreach and engagement plans in support of City priorities, projects, and programs;
- Writes, edits, reviews, and coordinates City publications, public information materials, news articles, press releases, feature stories, public service announcements, correspondence, and other communications content;
- Develops creative concepts and produces or coordinates graphics and other visual materials consistent with the City’s brand and visual identity;
- Plans, captures, edits, and produces photography, video, and multimedia content for City communications, public information campaigns, events, and digital platforms;
- Develops, schedules, publishes and monitors social media content; evaluates engagement and performance data; responds to or coordinates responses to public questions and comments as appropriate;
- Creates and reviews digital communications for compliance with applicable accessibility requirements and City standards, including webpages, electronic documents, social media content, graphics, video, and multimedia; and
- Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university in journalism, public relations, communications, marketing, graphic design, business administration, public administration or other closely related field.
Experience: Two (2) years of recent, professional experience in marketing, communications, public information, or related field.
Qualifying experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
Experience with drone/Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) photography and video production is highly desirable.
Public sector work experience is highly desirable.
"Recent" is defined as relevant experience in the last 5 years.

The City may change these testing and interview dates at its discretion due to departmental staffing and operational needs.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
The applicant selected will be subject to a criminal history investigation through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and a thorough background check. A waiver for reference and background information must be completed.
City of Santee employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
