Summary of Job Duties:

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist works under minimal supervision. A Clinical Pharmacy Specialist provides to the department expertise not routinely available in the pharmacy staff. These individuals have a broad background in specific clinical areas (such as critical care), or the individual may have expertise in specific clinical areas (such as pediatrics, neonatology) or the individual may have expertise in specific pharmacy management areas (such as information systems or drug utilization evaluation). This pharmacy specialist is regarded as the leading expert in their field in the institution, in this case, neonatal ICU.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy or BS Pharmacy Degree
• PGY1 residency training OR 3 years of applicable experience (the dept can specify experience)
• AR licensure or eligible for licensure

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY2 residency in Critical Care or Pediatrics or 5 years experience working as a clinical pharmacist in a neonatal/pediatric setting.
• Board Certification in pediatrics and/or pharmacotherapy is preferred and required within 3 years of hire.

Responsibilities:

• Provides pharmaceutical services throughout medical center and consultative assistance to physicians, nurses, and other clinic staff in area of specialty.
• Works as an active member of multidisciplinary team and collaborates with healthcare providers within decentralized patient care areas to provide patient-centered care.
• Delivers medication therapy management services within specialty patient area of care; adjusts care according to patient response and provides clinical intervention to detect, mitigate and prevent medication adverse effects, and ensure effectivity of pharmaceutical care programs.
• Recommends alternative treatments as necessary.
• Facilitates specialty medication procurement, ordering and dispensing procedures.
• Adopts practices to improve work processes.
• Develops and implements systems to track outcomes and reporting of project activities.
• Supports experiential education; creates documentation to be used in clinical trials on request.
• Develops evidence-based academic, detailed informational material using computer software.
• Works in support of population health initiatives to identify, design, and implement improvement in the medication-use system to advance patient safety, maximize therapeutic outcomes, or control costs.  
• Performs other duties as assigned.
