Position: Test Engineer

Department:  Quality Team Department

Reports to:  Quality Team Supervisor

The Test Engineer is responsible for the engineering development test, implementation, technical support, and continuous improvement of Test Floor activities supporting the production, quality programs and verification of large, electric motors, generators, and related equipment.

The position provides engineering ownership for test methods, test plans, procedures, technical requirements, verification activities, data interpretation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement while ensuring testing is performed in accordance with applicable customer requirements, engineering specifications, and industry standards.

Major Areas of Accountability

1. Test Engineering and Planning

• Develop test plans and test strategies based on customer requirements, engineering specifications, applicable standards, and product characteristics.
• Determine the appropriate test methods, resources, instrumentation, equipment, and technical requirements necessary to complete testing.
• Develop, validate, and maintain test procedures.
• Establish technical test parameters and acceptance criteria in coordination with applicable Engineering, Quality, and customer requirements.

2. Engineering Interpretation and Product Verification

• Independently interpret engineering specifications, drawings, customer requirements, and verification data.
• Analyze test results to determine technical compliance with applicable standards and specifications..
• Identify trends, anomalies, and technical risks in test data.
• Provide engineering conclusions and recommendations based on test results.
• Support resolution of technical questions related to product verification.

3. Technical Troubleshooting

• Provide engineering-level troubleshooting and technical support for Test Floor issues.
• Investigate abnormal test results and determine appropriate technical actions.
• Support root-cause analysis of electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, controls, and test-system problems.
• Coordinate technical problem resolution with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Maintenance, and other functions as required.

4. Technology and Equipment Test

• Research and evaluate advances in testing technology, instrumentation, controls, software, and data acquisition.
• Develop recommendations for improvements to Test Floor equipment and testing capabilities.
• Support implementation and validation of new test technology.
• Develop training materials and technical documentation for implemented technologies.

5. Continuous Improvement

• Develop and lead continuous improvement projects involving Test Floor safety, quality, productivity, capability, reliability, and efficiency.
• Identify opportunities to improve test methods, processes, equipment, data collection, and test-flow performance.
• Use appropriate problem-solving and continuous improvement methodologies to evaluate and implement improvements.
• Establish appropriate measurements to verify effectiveness of improvements.

6. Quality Documentation

• Create and maintain Test Engineering Quality Procedures, Work Instructions, Process Specifications..
• Review and approve applicable technical documentation within assigned authority.
• Ensure test documentation reflects current engineering requirements and approved processes.

7. Test Reports and Technical Records

• Create, review, and/or approve test reports documenting test results and technical conclusions.
• Verify that test data supports applicable engineering and customer requirements.
• Provide technical explanations and conclusions when required by internal or customer requirements.

8. Standards and Compliance

• Maintain working knowledge of applicable industry standards and requirements, including NEMA, IEEE, API, ISO, and other applicable standards.
• Evaluate testing requirements associated with customer specifications and applicable standards.
• Support interpretation and implementation of applicable technical and compliance requirements.

9. Training and Technical Development

• Develop technical training materials related to test methods, equipment, procedures, software, safety, and applicable standards.
• Provide technical training and guidance to Test Floor personnel as required.
• Support development of Test Floor technical competency.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong electrical and mechanical technical foundation with the ability to develop broad expertise in large electric motors and generators.
• Ability to interpret electrical and mechanical drawings, engineering specifications, customer requirements, and verification data.
• Knowledge of electrical testing, controls, instrumentation, programming, data acquisition, and test systems.
• Working knowledge of applicable NEMA, IEEE, API, ISO, and other industry standards.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to independently investigate technical problems and develop appropriate solutions.
• Strong communication and technical writing skills for engineering reports, procedures, presentations, and training.
• Ability to lead or participate in multidisciplinary continuous improvement teams.
• Ability and willingness to learn and apply new mechanical, electrical, software, controls, and test technologies.

Scope of Responsibility

The Test Engineer is responsible for the technical definition, development, interpretation, control, and continuous improvement of Test Floor testing activities.

The Test Engineer establishes or approves the technical requirements under the applicable organizational authority and provides technical direction and support to Test Floor personnel.

Physcial Requirements

• Physical ability to travel freely within manufacturing and office facilities. This requires climbing stairs and moving over, around, and about shop machinery. Have the physical ability to lift and carry up to 45 pounds unassisted.
