Description

Establish and document the recommended materials and manufacturing process for customer specific parts or assemblies from order entry through delivery to ensure profitability, manufacturing efficiency and conformance to customer specifications.


JOB FUNCTIONS: 


Pre-production engineering tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • Evaluate customer supplied documents for suitable use in the shop; as needed, create new or update 3D CAD models, shop drawings, work instructions or other engineering related documents that conform to established company standards.
  •  Create or update part master records to ensure they are correctly set up.
  • Review the Bill of Materials (BOM) for every component and work with Purchasing to ensure proper sources of supply are established and costs are within the quote allowances.
  • Prepare the process routing (Methods) for Production Control to release work orders to the shop floor.
  • Roll Standard Costs to update the system cost model for each part or assembly and compare to the quote allowance.
  • Review any quality specific customer documents or requirements and coordinate with the Quality to ensure quality processes are in place to ensure conformance to customer specifications.
  • Determine if specific fixtures or tooling is desirable or required: 
  • If it can be produced internally, work with Tooling group to design and document the fixtures/tooling; ensure jobs are released to Production and follow up with Production group to ensure proper function or improvements needed.
  • If not able or cost-effective to produce internally, coordinate with Purchasing to buy and verify suitability when received. 
  • Tooling and fixtures need to be within cost constraints established by the quote, if not, then notify Supervisor or Sales. 
  • Vault all prepared documents related to the project in PDM, the document control system. 
  • For new projects, determine materials, purchased items/services to set the best routing method for each part, sub-assembly, or assembly in comparison to the quoted process plan and estimated purchased costs from the Estimating quote. Notify Supervisor if manufacturing method when rolled for standard cost exceeds quoted selling price.
  • For repeat projects, analyze existing manufacturing process for changes to materials or methods to improve efficiency, profitability, repeatability and quality conformance. 
  • Manage assigned projects from order entry through delivery to the customer to ensure all customer requirements are met and costs are within quote allowances.
  • Provide support to Estimating, Production, Sales, Quality, Shipping, and other groups as needed.
  • Evaluate non-conforming reports or requests for BOM or Method changes; determine if corrective action or change is needed; if change is approved, follow-up to ensure change is effective.
  • Communicates with co-workers and supervisor to coordinate activities and facilitate timely work flow.
  • Follows all safety procedures and wears safety equipment or apparel as required.
  • Performs all job functions to meet acceptable quality and performance standards.
  • (May) Plan and write numerical control programs for automatic machine tool work centers

May be required to follow other job-related instructions and duties as requested, subject to applicable state and federal laws.

Requirements

  • Minimum 6 years of precision sheet metal fabrication related work experience
  • Proficiency with computer systems utilizing Windows OS, business and CAD software
  • 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Onshape, PDM, or DraftSight a plus)
  • Business Enterprise Software (Epicor, paperlessParts, MS Office a plus)
  • Strong organizational skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or industrial engineering
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 25 pounds of force frequently 
  • Accommodation as required for reading documents, computer screens and quality instruments


WORKING CONDITIONS: 


Typical metal manufacturing environment with exposure to powder coat paint facility. Both active and sedentary work, which may involve repetitive motions of the wrists, hands and/or fingers, walking, standing, bending and lifting.
