Description

Enrolled Agent – Individual Tax

Full-Time | Public Accounting | $120,000–$150,000

An established public accounting firm is looking to add an experienced Enrolled Agent (EA) to take ownership of a substantial portfolio of individual tax clients.

This is a unique opportunity for someone who enjoys 1040 work, direct client relationships, and independently managing the entire tax process without needing to pursue the traditional CPA/partner track.

The firm already has a significant existing book of individual tax clients and is looking for someone who can step in, take ownership, and run that work with minimal oversight.

What You'll Do

  • Manage a portfolio of primarily stand-alone individual / Form 1040 clients
  • Own engagements from beginning to end, including:
    • Client communication and document collection
    • Tax return preparation
    • Review of your own work
    • Identifying missing information or potential issues
    • Finalizing and signing returns
    • Delivering and explaining completed returns to clients
  • Meet directly with clients throughout the year
  • Answer individual tax questions and provide ongoing client support
  • Handle tax notices and routine correspondence when needed
  • Independently manage deadlines, workflow, and client expectations
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for your assigned client base

The initial existing workload could include approximately 150 individual returns, with additional opportunity to grow the practice over time.

What We're Looking For

  • Active Enrolled Agent (EA) designation
  • Significant experience preparing individual income tax returns
  • Strong working knowledge of Form 1040 and individual taxation
  • Ability to independently take a return from initial client contact through completion and signature
  • Confidence making decisions with minimal supervision
  • Strong client communication skills
  • Comfortable working with clients who may want additional explanation, guidance, and face-to-face interaction
  • Highly organized and able to independently manage a recurring client base

This is not an entry-level tax preparer position. The firm is looking for someone who already knows how to run the process and is comfortable taking full responsibility for their work.

Experience with business, partnership, S corporation, trust, or other entity returns is welcome but not required. The primary focus of this position will be individual tax work.

Why This Role Is Different

Many public accounting firms expect experienced tax professionals to continually move toward increasingly complex engagements, management responsibilities, business development, and eventually partnership.

This opportunity offers another path.

If you enjoy tax work and client service but would rather own your book, complete quality work, and build long-term client relationships, this position allows you to specialize in exactly that.

You'll take responsibility for a group of clients currently being serviced by senior CPAs and partners, freeing them to focus on more complex engagements while giving you real ownership of your practice area.

There is also significant demand for this type of individual tax work in the market. The firm currently turns away potential 1040 clients and sees an opportunity to potentially build this into a larger individual tax practice with the right person leading the work.

Compensation

$120,000–$150,000, depending on experience and the breadth of tax knowledge you bring to the role.

Candidates focused primarily on individual taxation are encouraged to apply. Broader tax experience may support compensation toward the upper end of the range.

Work Environment

Because many of these clients value personal interaction and prefer meeting directly with their tax professional, this position requires someone who is local and comfortable with in-person client meetings.

The ideal person is an experienced tax professional who enjoys working independently but still wants to be part of a collaborative public accounting firm.

Confidential inquiries encouraged.
If you’re an experienced Enrolled Agent who enjoys individual tax work and would like to explore an opportunity where you can truly own your client relationships, apply below or connect directly for a confidential conversation.
