The Safety Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety programs across construction sites, facilities, and real estate operations. This role ensures compliance with safety regulations, conducts risk assessments, and fosters a culture of safety excellence to protect employees, contractors, and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Program Management

• Develop and implement comprehensive health and safety programs aligned with regulatory requirements and organizational standards
• Establish safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices for construction and facility operations
• Maintain and update safety management systems and documentation
• Monitor safety program effectiveness and recommend improvements

Risk Assessment and Hazard Management

• Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and job safety analyses for construction activities and workplace operations
• Identify potential hazards and implement appropriate control measures
• Perform safety audits and inspections of sites, equipment, and work practices
• Develop and implement emergency response and evacuation plans

Regulatory Compliance

• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal health and safety regulations (OSHA, EPA, or regional equivalents)
• Monitor changes in safety legislation and update programs accordingly
• Prepare and submit required safety reports to regulatory authorities
• Liaise with regulatory agencies during inspections and investigations

Training and Communication

• Develop and deliver safety training programs including site inductions, toolbox talks, and specialized safety courses
• Conduct safety orientation for new employees, contractors, and visitors
• Create safety communication materials including bulletins, signage, and alerts
• Promote safety awareness campaigns and initiatives

Incident Management

• Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes
• Prepare detailed incident reports with corrective and preventive actions
• Track and analyze safety metrics including incident rates, leading indicators, and trends
• Coordinate workers' compensation claims and return-to-work programs

Site Safety Oversight

• Conduct regular site inspections to verify compliance with safety standards
• Monitor contractor safety performance and ensure adherence to safety requirements
• Review method statements and risk assessments submitted by contractors
• Stop unsafe work activities and enforce corrective measures

Safety Equipment and Systems

• Specify, procure, and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety devices
• Ensure proper inspection, testing, and maintenance of safety equipment
• Evaluate and recommend safety technologies and equipment improvements
• Manage inventory of safety supplies and equipment

Required Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Health, or related field
• Professional safety certifications (CSP, CIH, NEBOSH, IOSH, or regional equivalents) preferred

Experience

• 3-5 years of experience in safety engineering, preferably in construction or real estate environments
• Demonstrated experience implementing safety management systems
• Experience conducting safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations

Technical Knowledge

• Comprehensive understanding of health and safety regulations and standards
• Knowledge of construction safety practices, fall protection, confined space, electrical safety, and hazardous materials
• Familiarity with safety management systems (ISO 45001 or equivalent)
• Understanding of industrial hygiene principles

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in safety management software and incident reporting systems
• Competency in Microsoft Office Suite for reporting and data analysis
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
• Knowledge of safety monitoring equipment and measurement devices

Additional Requirements

• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to multiple site locations
• Physical ability to conduct site inspections including climbing, walking on uneven surfaces, and working in various weather conditions
• Availability for emergency response and incident investigations outside regular business hours
• First Aid and CPR certification preferred
• Commitment to continuous professional development in safety practices
