Maintenance Worker I

THIS RECRUITMENT IS TO FILL ONE (1) FULL-TIME VACANCY IN THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT AND ESTABLISH AN ELIBILITY LIST THAT MAY BE USED TO FILL FUTURE VACANCIES

The examination process consists of a competitive evaluation of qualifications based on a review of the employment application and supplemental questionnaire. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will be a motivated, dependable, and safety-conscious individual with an interest in performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work in areas such as streets, landscaping, or facilities. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, initiative, attention to detail, effective time management, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team while following established procedures and direction.

Experience performing concrete, asphalt, street maintenance, construction, landscaping, facilities maintenance, or other closely related maintenance work is highly desirable. Experience operating hand and power tools, light construction equipment, and performing physically demanding outdoor work is also desirable. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to quality workmanship, strong customer service and communication skills, and a willingness to respond to Public Works emergency situations as operational needs require.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate supervision from a Public Works Supervisor, and technical and functional supervision from a Senior Maintenance Worker or a higher-level maintenance worker.EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform minor repairs on equipment and report the need for major repairs; check and adjust fluid level; grease and lubricate moving parts as required.
• Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
• Perform repaving, patching, overlaying, pothole and crack sealing repair of asphalt.
• Answer questions from the public at work site.
• Maintain and repair service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
• Inventory and order supplies and equipment related to assigned task.
• May perform a variety of general manual labor duties.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Load and transport construction equipment to and from the work site.
• Paint traffic control markings such as crosswalks, lane stripes and parking zones on City streets and curbs; lay out and install traffic signs throughout the City.
• Operate light construction equipment and power tools such as compressors, jackhammers, compactors, paint sprayers, sandblasters, concrete saws and drainage rodders.
• Perform duties related to graffiti abatement; paint over or sand blast graffiti restore surface to original quality; identify and report graffiti as soon as possible.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:

• Common tools and materials used in public works maintenance.
• Basic repair and maintenance procedures and practices.
• Safe work practices and policies.

Ability to:

• On a continuous basis, know and understand maintenance activities and observe safety rules. Intermittently, identify potential safety hazards; locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember supervisor's instructions; and explain jobs to other employees.
• Intermittently, sit while driving a piece of equipment; stand and walk while performing maintenance activities; bend and twist to adjust equipment; kneel and squat to review work; climb up on heavy equipment to begin operations; perform simple and power grasping; pushing and pulling; fine manipulation; and lift or carry weight of 100 pounds or less.
• Perform maintenance activities.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Work with the variety of tools related to public service maintenance.
• Learn to use computer in order to maintain variety of inventory, replacement and repair records.
• Perform heavy manual labor.
• Learn to work independently in the absence of supervision.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 Special Requirements:

• Will work weekends and evenings as required.

Experience and Training:
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the require knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

• (1) one year of experience in maintenance work including some semi-skilled assignments is desirable.

Training:

• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Licenses and Certifications: 

• A valid California Class C Driver's License or the ability to obtain by the time of appointment and maintain a satisfactory driving record. May need to possess certification for an area of assignment as required by the position.
