Description
Job Summary:
At Helm Operations, we build the software that keeps the world's maritime operations moving - from tugboats in Vancouver Harbour to pilotage authorities across Australia. We're looking for a Quality Assurance Analyst to be the champion of quality on our Ports/Pilotage team, providing dedicated QA coverage for the Pilbara Ports engagement in Western Australia. As a QA Analyst embedded in the pilotage delivery pod, you'll work closely with the pilotage developer, product owners, and cross-functional teammates to make sure Helm CONNECT's pilotage/berthing capability - berth allocation, pilot allocation, pilotage records, and the integrations that power it, including the FAID fatigue-scoring engine and Work Rest - meets the highest standards of reliability, usability, and performance. This is a live, operationally critical, safety-relevant customer integration, so you don't just find bugs - you ask the questions that prevent them, challenge assumptions early, and make the whole team think more deeply about quality. Most tickets have both a front-end and back-end component, so you'll be comfortable using APIs, database queries, and AI to test thoroughly.
Job Description:
What you are responsible for:
Quality Strategy and Execution:
- Design, write, and execute test cases across web and mobile platforms for the pilotage workflow and its supporting integrations.
- Create and maintain test plans for pilotage releases and go-live milestones (Port Hedland, Dampier), ensuring coverage is intentional, traceable, and clearly communicated to the team.
- Work with product owners and the pilotage developer to identify areas of risk and strategically prioritize testing to maximize coverage and impact.
- Validate integration quality between Helm CONNECT and the FAID fatigue-scoring engine, the Work Rest pipeline, and the Berth & Pilot Recommendation microservice.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Participate in daily stand-ups, design discussions, sprint grooming, and retrospectives as an active contributor who shapes conversations around quality.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teammates - including support and account managers - to investigate reported issues and ensure high-priority problems are visible, tracked, and never fall through the cracks.
- Document new pilotage features clearly, translating technical changes into plain language for people outside the team.
AI-Augmented Quality Assurance:
- Leverage AI tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) to accelerate test case generation, defect triage, regression analysis, and documentation.
- Critically evaluate AI-generated output - catching hallucinations, refining results, and ensuring AI-assisted work meets Helm's quality standards.
- Experiment with emerging AI tools and share learnings with the broader QA team to continuously improve testing efficiency.
Continuous Improvement:
- Advocate for quality as a mindset across the team, not just a final checkpoint.
- Identify opportunities to improve testing processes, tooling, and coverage on the pilotage product line.
- Support the growth of test automation practices within the team.
What you bring to the team:
Technical Expertise:
- 3+ years of software testing experience with a strong grasp of QA best practices and methodologies in an agile/scrum environment.
- Strong manual testing fundamentals, including boundary testing and risk-based prioritization, with a propensity for identifying edge cases and chartering off the happy path.
- Proven experience in manual, integration, and API testing.
- Working knowledge of databases and APIs, including how to query and inspect them during testing.
- Solid understanding of Git fundamentals - branching, pull requests, code reviews, and navigating a shared repository.
- Solid intuition for design and usability, not just functional correctness.
- Strong self-management and organizational abilities, with a track record of working effectively in a remote setting.
Communication and Collaboration:
- Excellent written and verbal English, with the confidence to ask questions and push back when something is unclear.
- Proactive communicator who shares progress and clarifies expectations without needing to be asked.
- Effective collaborator across developers, product owners, support, and account management.
Education, Certifications and Training:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.
- 3+ years of software testing experience.
Bonus points if you also have:
- Maritime Industry Knowledge.
- Hands-on use of AI tools (like Claude) in testing, with good judgement about how to guide them toward useful, trustworthy results.
- A clear sense for what makes a web app usable on a phone: button sizing, touch interactions, small-viewport layout, and the conventions mobile users expect.
- Experience with test automation frameworks such as Playwright.
- Experience with platforms like BrowserStack for desktop and mobile testing.
- Experience testing third-party system integrations (e.g., fatigue/biomathematical engines such as FAID).
- Familiarity with AI-augmented SDLC processes and how QA integrates with AI-accelerated development.
What technologies you will be working with:
Git, JIRA, Confluence, Slack, BrowserStack, Playwright, PostgreSQL (PG Admin), Postman, Claude, PowerShell, and more.
Who you are:
- Goal-Oriented: You love setting and smashing goals, understanding that meeting objectives is key to success.
- Self-Motivated: You take charge of your workload, ensuring you meet deliverables with ease.
- Communication Skills: Your words, whether written or spoken, always hit the mark.

- Ownership: You own your role and make things happen.
- Problem-Solver: You tackle challenges head-on with critical thinking and creativity.
- Forward-Thinking: You love pushing the boundaries of design and innovation.
- Quality Work: You consistently produce high-quality work, knowing when to seek help.
- Resourceful: You find or create the tools and processes you need to succeed.
- Team Player: You motivate and support your team, driving collective success.
- Attention to Detail: You are highly organized with a keen eye for detail and always meet deadlines.
- You Learn by Doing: You embrace hands-on learning and grow from your experiences and are always ready to learn something new.
