Job Description Summary
The Campus Safety NFWS Student Worker supports the Campus Safety department in two capacities: (1) as Event Staff, providing a safety and customer-service presence at University events, and (2) as a Relief Pool Officer, covering open shifts within the regular Campus Safety patrol schedule. This is a non-sworn, entry-level student position that operates under the direct supervision of full-time Campus Safety staff. The role does not carry law-enforcement authority, arrest powers, or independent judgment calls on policy or disciplinary matters — it supports and executes the processes and post orders defined by Campus Safety leadership.Job Description
Key Responsibilities
Event Staffing
- Provide a visible safety and security presence at University events (athletics, concerts, commencement, move-in/move-out, and similar)
- Monitor venue access points; check credentials, tickets, or event passes as required
- Direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic flow at event entrances, exits, and parking areas
- Respond to minor incidents or questions on-site and notify dispatch/full-time staff for anything requiring escalation
- Assist with crowd management and support emergency evacuation procedures as directed
Relief Pool Officer Coverage
- Cover open shifts within the regular Campus Safety patrol schedule arising from call-outs, vacancies, or seasonal demand
- Conduct routine foot and/or vehicle patrols of campus buildings, grounds, and parking areas as assigned
- Monitor and secure building access points; lock/unlock facilities per the posted schedule
- Document observations, activities, and incidents in daily logs and the incident reporting system
General Duties
- Operate assigned radios and University safety communication systems
- Provide directions and general customer service to students, staff, and visitors
- Report safety hazards, maintenance issues, and policy violations to full-time Campus Safety staff
- Assist with lost-and-found, parking, and traffic-control support as needed
Training Requirement
Field Training Officer (FTO) Program — Mandatory: All Campus Safety NFWS Student Workers must complete an 80-hour Field Training Officer (FTO) program before being cleared to work independently across all assigned shift types (event staffing, patrol, and relief-pool coverage, including evening and overnight shifts). Until FTO completion and sign-off, shifts are limited to paired/supervised assignments as determined by the Campus Safety Lieutenant.
Qualifications
- Must be a currently enrolled Saint Leo University student eligible for Non-Federal Work Study (NFWS) employment
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Successful completion of a background check is required prior to start
- Availability to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and University event days
- Strong communication and customer-service skills
- Ability to remain calm and follow established post orders and escalation procedures in routine and non-routine situations
- Prior security, safety, customer-service, or hospitality experience preferred but not required
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and patrol on foot for extended periods, indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions
- Ability to climb stairs and walk extended distances across campus between posts
- Ability to work event shifts that may extend into evening or overnight hours
