Description
Lead projects that strengthen and modernize Wichita’s critical water distribution infrastructure. The General Maintenance Supervisor I serves as a project management leader within the Water Distribution Division, overseeing capital improvement projects, special projects, and system planning initiatives from planning through completion. This position coordinates with engineering consultants, construction contractors, subcontractors, and City teams to manage project scope, budgets, schedules, design, quality, and construction activities. The role combines water distribution expertise, construction management, project planning, contract coordination, and problem-solving to deliver reliable infrastructure and efficient use of public resources. Working with considerable independence, the General Maintenance Supervisor I helps transform long-term water system needs into completed projects that support safe, dependable potable water service for Wichita residents, businesses, and the community.
Workdays and Hours - Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm

Anticipated starting salary: $55,980 - $77,760 (based on experience and qualifications)**Posting may close at any time **
- Manage assigned project activities, including special studies, program reviews, and construction projects from beginning to end within the established project scope and direction.
- Assist in defining project scope, goals and deliverables that support Departmental goals in collaboration with senior management and project stakeholders.
- Coordinates with System Planning for water distribution CIP projects.
- Coordinates and manages assigned CIP projects and special projects.
- Monitor project scope and budgets throughout the project duration.
- Prioritize and coordinate staff and contractor schedules to complete multiple project tasks.
- Document and communicate out of scope work with the contractor and execute any necessary amendment s.
- Plan, track and schedule project timelines and milestones using appropriate management tools.
- Review progress reports and invoice documents to ensure accuracy and applicability to the project scope and recommend approval or correction as appropriate.

- Thorough knowledge of the functions of water distribution systems.
- Working knowledge and principles and practices of civil engineering with emphasis on potable water distribution.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, meeting established deadlines.
- Ability to effectively plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
- Project Management experience that includes managing diverse workgroups while evaluating the feasibility of a variety of technical concepts.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and plan sheets.
- Ability to traverse uneven terrain, climb steps or ladders, and tolerate airborne environmental nuisances associated with construction sites.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other Divisions and Departments, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in theworkplace
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university plus two (2) years of professional project management experience involving construction, rehabilitation, maintenance, or capital improvements for a water distribution system, water treatment plant, pump station, or municipal utility facility, supervising employees, contractors, or project team members.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or mechanical engineering.

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
