Description
The Inventory Clerk is responsible for supporting daily inventory control functions within the distribution yard, warehouse, and manufacturing support operations. This position works under the direction of the Inventory Lead Person to maintain accurate inventory records, support cycle counting activities, investigate discrepancies, and ensure proper material tracking throughout the operation.
The Inventory Clerk plays a key role in supporting inventory accuracy, operational efficiency, and customer service by ensuring inventory transactions are completed timely and accurately.
Key Responsibilities
Inventory Control
- Perform daily cycle counts and inventory audits as assigned.
- Verify inventory quantities and product locations throughout the yard and warehouse.
- Assist with investigating inventory discrepancies and reporting findings to the Inventory Lead.
- Process inventory adjustments, transfers, and corrections within ERP/WMS systems.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and documentation.
- Assist with annual physical inventory preparation and execution.
Receiving & Material Tracking
- Verify receiving documentation against physical product received.
- Assist with inventory transfers between yards, warehouses, and manufacturing locations.
- Monitor special-order and customer-owned inventory.
- Ensure inventory is properly tagged, labeled, and stored in correct locations.
- Support inventory tracking for damaged, returned, or obsolete material.
Yard & Warehouse Support
- Work closely with pulling, staging, loading, and receiving teams to resolve inventory issues.
- Assist with locating missing material and correcting misplaced inventory.
- Help maintain organized inventory locations and clean work areas.
- Support inventory relocation and slotting projects as assigned.
Systems & Administrative Functions
- Enter and maintain accurate inventory transactions in Epicor BisTrack or related systems.
- Utilize RF scanners and inventory software to track product movement.
- Generate basic inventory reports and assist with variance reporting.
- Monitor and report inventory transaction errors or system issues.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow company safety procedures and operational guidelines.
- Maintain safe and organized work areas.
- Operate forklifts and material handling equipment safely when authorized.
Requirements
Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
Experience
- 1–3 years of warehouse, inventory, yard, or distribution experience preferred.
- Experience in building materials or distribution operations preferred.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Basic math and inventory counting skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Basic computer and data entry skills.
- Ability to learn ERP/WMS systems and RF scanning technology.
- Ability to prioritize and complete assigned tasks independently.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting, bending, and climbing.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to safely operate forklifts and material handling equipment.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with Epicor BisTrack or similar ERP/WMS systems.
- RF scanner and barcode inventory system experience.
- Forklift certification or ability to become certified.
- Knowledge of building materials, lumber, truss, or millwork products.
- Experience supporting cycle counts and inventory audits.
