Description
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. · Diagnoses and makes repairs to light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment. Diagnosing and repairing of mechanical problems, which can include engine, transmission, electrical, and suspension issues. Inspect vehicle engine and mechanical/electrical components for vehicle functionality and longevity.
· Incumbent performs preventative maintenance, repairs, and diagnostics of light, medium, and heavy-duty gas and diesel-powered equipment. Also, performs mechanical repairs to hydraulic and electrical systems. Creates work orders, maintains a file system, and closes out tickets.
· Performing regular maintenance on fleet vehicles, including oil changes, tire rotation, and inspections Repair or replace broken or dysfunctional parts and fix issues. Conduct test drives to gauge the performance of the vehicles.
· Knowledge of computers and computer based diagnostic tools and equipment to identify problems. Staying up-to-date with the latest automotive technologies and best practices.
· Keeping detailed records of all repairs and maintenance performed. Keep logs on work and issues ensuring all vehicles meet safety standards and regulations. Keeping workshop clean, safe, and organized.
· Working closely with fleet manager to coordinate scheduled maintenance and repairs.
· Inspect tools and equipment for condition and assures that all are kept in good working order, and that all work assures adherence to high standards of quality.
· Assisting in the acquisition of parts and equipment necessary for repairs and maintenance. Providing recommendations for major repairs or vehicle replacements for purchase orders when necessary.
· Work safely at all times, adhering to OSHA, MSHA, and Road Department policies. Read and follow daily job hazard analyses with on-site personnel, ensuring the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), traffic control, and work zone safety requirements. Comply with safety policies and procedures.
· Maintain work-related records and logs, and manage personal protective equipment (PPE). Maintain radio communication with the supervisor to receive instructions or report issues. Demonstrate the ability to read, understand, interpret, and apply codes and ordinances related to environmental health.
· Interact with the public to ensure compliance with regulations and foster effective relationships. Collaborate with team to meet fleet objectives.
· Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others. Ability to follow established procedures and practices.
· Perform additional routine maintenance activities as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Standards:
· Required High School Diploma or GED certificate.
· Valid New Mexico Driver's License.
· Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
· 1-2 years of work experience in a repair shop or maintenance facility. Certification from a vocational school (e.g ASE) or completion of an apprenticeship is preferred. Educational experience in automotive service repair may substitute for required experience
Supervision:
Works under the direction of the Road Director, Road Supervisor or designee.

· Able to comprehend and read equipment gauges and operating instructions.
· Able to accurately estimate distances to operate equipment safely within adequate safety margins.
· Able to read maps and understand county districts and roads for effective time and distance management.
Physical Functions:
· Able to sit, stand, and/or walk for up to 4 hours at a time and up to 10 hours daily.
· Able to lift and carry up to 90 lbs. for distances up to 100 yards, up to 10 times daily.
· Able to climb, crouch, or kneel on, in, or under equipment as needed on a daily basis.
· Able to use and coordinate eyes, hands, arms, and legs to operate equipment when necessary.
· Possess manual dexterity and coordination sufficient to operate tools and equipment necessary to perform duties.
Working Conditions:
· Indoor work is performed in open metal buildings with concrete floors.
· Outdoor work will range from cement and/or asphalt surfaces to gravel, dirt, inclines, and rough terrain, which may be dry or wet depending on weather conditions. Winds of 5-30 mph are frequent.
· The main office area is approximately 20 by 30 feet with a secretary, a private office for the Supervisor, and a Director's office. The general shop area is approximately 15,000 sq. ft. and is partially enclosed. Restrooms are in the general office area.
· Sound levels will vary from low/moderate to high, depending on the equipment being operated or used.
· Indoor lighting comes from windows and fluorescent lights. Outdoor lighting is primarily by daylight, although emergency or night work may require floodlights or emergency-type lighting.
· Supplies, parts, fuel, and materials are usually stored in the shop or immediate yard area.
Additional Requirements:
· Able to attend position-related meetings and seminars that may be out of town and require irregular hours.
· Available for additional emergency and work-related situations outside of normal work hours.
Equipment, Tools, and Materials:
· Manual hand tools and powered hand tools, including shovels, rakes, axes, picks, pitchforks, various digging tools, drills, trimmers, augers, pneumatic equipment, and welding and cutting equipment.
· Numerous shop tools, including welders, sprayers, hoists, jacks, and assorted hand and power tools.
· Metal and wood filing and storage cabinets, both vertical and horizontal.
· Work hazards may include exposure to petroleum products, including noxious fumes, concealed and open gas and electrical lines, wet, oily, or greasy surfaces, vicious animals, insects, desert reptiles, and extreme temperatures.
· Various safety equipment, including mandatory fire-retardant clothing, steel-toed shoes/boots, reflective vests, face and eye protection (or glasses), protective gloves, and hot/cold weather gear. The candidate may also be required to wear a properly rated hardhat, hearing protection, a ventilator, a back-support belt, and have access to traffic cones, barriers, and flags as needed.
