The Detroit Mechatronics Engineering team develops and validates powertrain electronic hardware systems to support conventional diesel engine technologies and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements across Daimler Truck’s heavy-duty powertrain portfolio. We specialize in the research & development of wiring harnesses, powertrain sensors, smart actuators and system-level controls for internal combustion engines, working closely with cross-functional and international teams to deliver globally competitive solutions while meeting local customer & legislative requirements. A major part of the role incorporates leading exhaust system sensor & actuator program management activities to ensure project timelines, budget, cost & quality targets are met. In addition to core technical responsibilities, the role includes leading AI/ML analytics, predictive modeling and test & report automation to improve efficiency, consistency and data-driven decision making across the Engine Hardware department.

What You Drive at DTNA

• Lead development, validation & release of exhaust system hardware as pertaining to sensors, actuators and system-level controls.
• Drive internal change management (ICM) measures for future engine programs to reduce project costs and improve system efficiency.
• Manage and strategically plan sensor programs with suppliers, quality & warranty engineering with respect to sensor lifetime validation and warranty targets.
• Lead agile-based efforts to resolve production sensor issues by reducing unnecessary field sensor replacements.
• Advance sensor development by performing application sign-off activities and conducting teardown evaluations.
• Develop internal spec books for electronic sensors based on supplier information, vehicle testing and quality & warranty data using failure mode & effects analysis (FMEA).
• Develop tools to assess sensor & actuator performance from CAN communication data gathered in performance test cells, durability, HiL lab, engineering vehicles, reliability growth fleet and customer demo units.
• Lead and implement AI/ML projects, predictive modeling and data analytics initiatives to reduce project costs, enhance the product and improve efficiency across the department.
• Leverage machine learning and neural network architecture to reduce sensor & actuator part costs and improve quality.
• Analyze data, draw conclusions, and provide recommendations for critical projects across Detroit Engineering to the management team using big data tools such as Databricks & Python.
• Leverage strong relationships with global counterparts to efficiently test and release mechatronics hardware.
• Independently schedule work including issuing work orders, monitoring progress, and resolving problems to ensure timely completion of projects.
• Generate ideas to reduce product costs and improve quality.
• Create project plans and timelines and assist management with defining budget requirements.
•  Promptly resolve plant issues and field problems.
• Lead cross-functional activities with regional and global counterparts in Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Sales, Purchasing, and Suppliers.
• Communicate effectively and maintain professional/social interaction in a multi-cultural and international environment.
• Improve knowledge and skills through training; actively identify areas of potential self-improvement and alert management of opportunities for training.
• Lead initiatives to improve product quality, process efficiency, and employee satisfaction.
• Maintain daily records of work hours by project.

Knowledge You Should Bring

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Computer Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology (ABET Accredited University).
• 3-5 years of aftertreatment engineering experience in the automotive or commercial vehicle industry.
• 3+ years of experience interpreting regulations, cross-functional requirements and developing powertrain strategies to fulfill the requirements.
• 3+ years of experience utilizing MATLAB Simulink for modeling and development.
• 3+ years of programming experience utilizing Python & Databricks to query big data and automate data processing and reporting.
• Strong electrical or mechanical aptitude.
• Experience identifying and solving the root cause of complex problems.
• Strong interpersonal skills and able to work with and get work done effectively through others.
• Ability to think independently and critically formulate plans and make decisions in a fast paced, emerging and sometimes ambiguous environment.
• Ability to work in a truly global environment with different cultures to collaborate successfully.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and inform management of any barriers.
• Excellent communication, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong PC skills including MS Office and database tools.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 15%.

Exceptional Candidates Might Have

• Master of Science or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Computer Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology (ABET Accredited University).

• Strong knowledge of controls theory (i.e. PID, feedforward, Kalman filter, sensor dynamics, etc.).
• Experience with internal HiL, test cell and vehicle testing tools such as proveTech, MARC V7.4, CANape and ecu.test.
• Experience with machine learning and neural network frameworks with respect to sensor & actuator technology.
