Position Overview:
As an Instrumentation Designer in our Calgary office, you will support the development and delivery of instrumentation and control system design documentation for projects within the energy and infrastructure sectors. You will work closely with instrumentation engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to develop accurate, practical, and coordinated design deliverables throughout the project lifecycle. This role requires strong instrumentation design skills, hands-on experience with Hexagon SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), and an understanding of control system interfaces and project execution requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Instrumentation Design & Documentation
- Develop and maintain instrumentation design drawings, layouts, details, schematics, and related project documentation.
- Prepare and revise instrument indexes, instrument data sheets, specifications, I/O lists, loop diagrams, hook-ups, installation details, and other instrumentation deliverables.
- Develop instrumentation layouts and installation details in accordance with project requirements, applicable codes, standards, and established design practices.
- Incorporate engineering calculations, design criteria, equipment information, and technical specifications into design documents.
- Review instrumentation drawings and documentation for accuracy, completeness, consistency, and constructability.
- Interpret P&IDs, process documentation, engineering specifications, vendor information, and field data.
- Develop, maintain, and manage instrumentation design data using Hexagon SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI).
- Demonstrate strong working knowledge of SPI workflows, including instrument databases, specifications, indexes, wiring, loop documentation, and related project data.
- Support the development and coordination of instrumentation information for DCS, PLC, SIS, and other control systems.
- Coordinate instrument signals, I/O requirements, control system interfaces, and related design information.
- Review control system and vendor documentation for consistency with instrumentation design requirements.
- Support updates to instrumentation databases and design documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
- Coordinate instrumentation design with process, electrical, mechanical, piping, civil, structural, and other project disciplines.
- Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews and coordination meetings.
- Identify and resolve design conflicts and interface issues.
- Coordinate instrument locations, cable routing, junction boxes, tubing, wiring, and other installation interfaces as required.
- Incorporate comments from engineers, project managers, clients, vendors, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Support instrumentation engineering teams throughout project design and delivery.
- Assist with preparation of design packages, material take-offs, technical documentation, and other project deliverables.
- Review vendor drawings, equipment documentation, and contractor submittals for consistency with design requirements.
- Support field investigations, site surveys, construction activities, commissioning, and as-built documentation as required.
- Assist with resolving requests for information and construction-related instrumentation design issues.
- Participate in instrument inspections, loop checks, testing, and commissioning activities as required.
- Follow established design procedures, quality assurance and quality control processes, and project standards.
- Maintain accurate and organized instrumentation databases, design files, and project documentation.
- Apply applicable instrumentation and control standards, codes, and industry practices to design activities.
- Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, consistency, and quality.
- Provide technical support and guidance to less-experienced designers as appropriate.
- Maintain awareness of evolving instrumentation, control system, and design practices.
Education & Experience
- Diploma or degree in Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Controls, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
- Intermediate level: 4–9 years of relevant instrumentation design or drafting experience.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with Hexagon SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) is required.
- Experience supporting instrumentation and control system projects within the energy, oil and gas, power, utilities, industrial, infrastructure, or related sectors is preferred.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering and design teams is preferred.
- Strong understanding of instrumentation design principles, drafting practices, applicable codes, and industry standards.
- Strong working experience with Hexagon SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), including instrumentation databases and project deliverables.
- Experience developing and maintaining instrument indexes, data sheets, I/O lists, loop diagrams, hook-ups, wiring information, and related documentation.
- Understanding of DCS, PLC, SIS, and other control system interfaces and instrumentation requirements.
- Ability to interpret P&IDs, process documentation, control narratives, engineering specifications, vendor documentation, and multidisciplinary drawings.
- Familiarity with common instrumentation, control system, design, drafting, and documentation software and tools.
- Understanding of instrumentation installation, wiring, tubing, cable routing, and field implementation requirements.
- Ability to identify design conflicts and develop practical solutions in coordination with engineers and other disciplines.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality design deliverables.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong problem-solving and coordination skills.
- Ability to receive direction, incorporate feedback, and take ownership of assigned work.
