Job Description:

Purpose:

Under general supervision, this position plans, schedules, and performs tasks in the assembly, repair, and maintenance of complex or intricate electromechanical equipment.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Develops weekly schedules for periodic maintenance and trouble-shooting. Records work performed and parts used for billing purposes.

  • Communicates with equipment users regarding schedule of periodic maintenance and other maintenance needs.

  • Conducts routine inspections.

  • Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment. Orders/issues parts and supplies.

  • Performs electromechanical repairs to complex equipment.

  • Modifies or refurbishes equipment.

  • Estimates time, labor, and materials for budget or billing purposes.

  • Performs welding, braising, or fabrication of some parts.

  • Maintains technical data on equipment to be serviced. Maintains inventory of parts.

  • Monitors contracted maintenance services.

May lead and train others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of symbols used in engineering drawing, circuit diagrams or schematics.

  • Knowledge of basic operations of small electric motors and pneumatic or hydraulic pumps.

  • Knowledge of safety in repair of energized electronic equipment.

  • Knowledge of operational function of equipment to be assembled repaired or maintained.

  • Knowledge of testing of electronic components.

  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in performing electromechanical equipment and component repair.

  • Knowledge of complex electrical systems.

  • Knowledge of City practices, policies, and procedures.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.

  • Skill in planning and organizing.

  • Ability to test and calibrate equipment or controls to close tolerance.

  • Ability to follow written specifications and interpret engineering drawings, circuit diagrams, schematics, or procedures for assembly or repair.

  • Ability to lead and train others.

  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus four (4) years of experience in repair and maintenance of electronic controlled pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.

  • Experience may substitute education up to four (4) years.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • If required, must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 120 days of hire.

  • Aviation: Requires a valid State of Texas Class C Driver License and the ability to meet driver eligibility standards detailed in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical training certifications, ie. Equipment & Engine Training Council (EETC), Briggs & Stratton, Blue Mountain Stihl, Kohler, Toro, Kawasaki, and/or Honda.

  • Experience in modifying and refurbishing equipment, welding, braising, or fabrication of some parts.

  • Experience in hydraulic and pneumatic diagnostics and repair.

  • Experience in Self Contained Breathing Apparatus diagnostics and repair.

  • Experience estimating labor, material, and repair costs for maintenance projects.

  • Experience training or guiding maintenance technicians.


 

Notes to Candidate:

Position Overview: The Electromechanical Maintenance Technician performs advanced maintenance, repair, and fabrication work on complex electromechanical systems and small engine equipment such as chain saws, weed eaters and hydraulic pumps. Working under minimal supervision, this position plans and schedules maintenance activities, assembles and troubleshoots equipment, and performs detailed inspections to ensure safe, reliable, and high‑quality operations across City of Austin work sites.

This role is responsible for creating and managing preventative maintenance schedules, completing complex diagnostic and repair tasks, and estimating labor, material, and repair costs for budgeting purposes. The technician also manages parts and supplies, oversees contracted maintenance services, and ensures all work complies with safety, operational, and regulatory requirements.

The position provides leadership by training and guiding other technicians, coordinating work activities, and supporting efficient maintenance operations. Additional duties include maintaining accurate service records, technical documentation, and parts inventories.

Pay Range: $26.03 - $31.04

Position(s) will be filled at the following location: Tim Louviere Service Center – 6301 Harold Ct.

Days and Hours: Monday – Thursday 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM, must be able to work various shifts, holidays, call-back, weekends and nights as required by business necessity

  • Verification of your education (which may include high school graduation or GED, undergraduate and/or graduate degrees) will be required. You must provide proof of education from an accredited organization/institution.

  • If you are in the military or a veteran, you will need to provide a copy of your DD-214 prior to confirming a start date.

Retention Incentive Bonus:

This position may be eligible for an Incentive Bonus of up to $3,000!

$500 after 90 days.

$500 after 180 days.

$1,000 after 1 year.

$1,000 after 2 years.

Driving Requirement:
This position requires a valid Texas Class C Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Travel:

If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

Critical Employee:

  • This position has been designated as critical for the City of Austin. Critical positions are necessary and vital and support activities that impact City or department operations. Work can be done while at a designated work site or while working at an alternate work location. Critical employees may be reassigned to another area to provide essential services to support any extraordinary situations or emergency conditions.


Secondary Employment:

  • All Austin Water employees are prohibited from accepting or engaging in any secondary employment that might conflict or interfere with an employee’s duty and responsibility to the Department.

  • Austin Water will review all secondary employment.
