Description
Company: Optiv Energy Canada Inc.
Job Type: Full-time, site based
Location: Eastern Ontario, Canada (solar farm construction site)
Salary Range: $45 to $50 per hour (CAD)
Benefits: RRSP matching, Extended Health / Dental / Vision, Vacation-Pay, Cell Phone Allowance, Self-Improvement Allowance, Annual Company Profit Sharing
WHO WE ARE:
Optiv Energy Inc. is a founder-led and managed renewable energy field services company, working on utility scale BESS, solar and wind projects. We are not a large corporation or private equity backed firm, we are a group of former technicians who truly understand the value of a strong company culture and live by it. You are not just a number at Optiv Energy, and profit is shared across the company every year.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
Optiv Energy Inc. is seeking a motivated, positive, and experienced Construction Health & Safety Representative for a utility-scale solar farm under construction in eastern Ontario. You are the person on site who makes sure the crew goes home the same way they arrived. You know the Ontario construction regulations, you are visible in the field every day, and you work with the site team to find hazards early and fix them before they hurt someone.
There are two sides to the job. On the field side, you inspect work, coach crews, and respond when something goes wrong. On the paperwork side, you keep the safety program, training records, and incident documentation current and defensible. Both matter.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Site inspections. Walk the site daily, covering pile driving and racking, module installation, trenching, MV cable pulling, and inverter, transformer, and substation work. Identify hazards and stop unsafe work.
- Regulatory compliance. Monitor compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Ontario Regulation 213/91 (Construction Projects), and with Optiv Energy and client safety programs.
- Hazard assessment. Lead and document daily toolbox talks, pre-job hazard assessments, and job safety analyses for each phase of work.
- Electrical safety. Oversee safe work around energized MV equipment, including lockout/tagout, grounding, and site switching procedures, in line with CSA Z462 and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
- High-risk work. Verify excavation and trench protection, fall protection and working at heights, confined space entry, crane and rigging plans, and heavy equipment traffic control.
- Environmental hazards. Manage heat and cold stress, ticks and wildlife, severe weather and lightning response, and silica and dust exposure for outdoor work through Ontario summers and winters.
- Training and records. Verify worker training and certifications (Working at Heights, WHMIS, First Aid/CPR, and equipment tickets) and keep the site training matrix current.
- Incident response. Investigate incidents and near misses, find root causes, and track corrective actions to closure. Support reporting to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development and the WSIB where required.
- Committees and inspectors. Support the Joint Health and Safety Committee or worker health and safety representative, host ministry inspector visits, and coordinate with the owner, EPC, and subcontractor safety leads.
- Emergency readiness. Maintain the site emergency response plan, including rural emergency access and muster points, and run drills.
- Reporting. Write the inspection reports, safety statistics, and corrective action logs that owners and project leadership rely on.
- 3+ years of hands-on construction health and safety experience on industrial, utility, or renewable energy projects in Ontario
- Working knowledge of the OHSA and O. Reg. 213/91, and of electrical safety requirements around energized equipment
- Current Ontario Working at Heights, WHMIS, and Standard First Aid/CPR certification
- Joint Health and Safety Committee Certification (Part One and Part Two), or willingness to complete it
- Good documentation habits. Clean reports matter as much as clean work here
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to stop work and coach experienced tradespeople
- Valid driver’s license and reliable access to the site in eastern Ontario
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
Some of these, not all of them. We will teach you the rest.
- NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) designation, or working toward it
- CRSP, CHST, CHSC, or similar designation, or working toward one
- Solar, wind, BESS, or substation construction experience
- CSA Z462 arc flash training and familiarity with MV lockout and grounding
- Crane, rigging, and heavy lift safety experience; confined space and excavation competency
- Experience with safety management software and incident reporting platforms
- Fluency in French, an asset for eastern Ontario
This is field work. You will be on an active construction site in eastern Ontario and work outdoors through summer and winter. Expect extended time in the field, time near energized MV equipment under strict safety protocols, work around heavy equipment and cranes, and some work at heights and in confined spaces. Hours follow the construction schedule and may include early starts and some weekends.
