The City of San Bernardino is seeking a Director of Information Technology (U) interested in planning, organizing, directing and managing the activities and operations of the Information Technology Department by providing expert professional assistance and guidance to the City Manager and departments on technology strategy, long-term technology initiatives and investments and uses of technology to solve operational needs and problems.

The Information Technology Department provides Citywide technology leadership, services, and support to ensure secure, reliable, and efficient operations across all City departments. The Department provides expert professional assistance and guidance to the City Manager and departments on technology strategy, long-term initiatives and investments, and the use of technology to address operational needs and challenges. Key areas of responsibility include business and public safety applications, network and telecommunications infrastructure, cybersecurity and data management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and centralized technical support.

The Director of Information Technology (U) is a key member of the City’s Executive Leadership Team, providing strategic leadership and direction for the City’s technology operations and initiatives. The Director oversees the Information Technology Department and ensures the delivery of secure, reliable, and effective technology services that support Citywide operations. Key areas of responsibility include:
Administration & Strategy: Oversees departmental operations, personnel, budgets, technology investments, policies, and long-range strategic planning. Advises City leadership on technology initiatives, emerging trends, and policy matters.
Information Systems & GIS: Directs the development, implementation, and support of Citywide business applications, public safety systems, enterprise databases, and specialized GIS services.
Infrastructure & Telecommunications: Oversees City networks, computer systems, hardware, software, data communications, and telecommunications services while establishing technology standards and evaluating major system investments.
Cybersecurity & Business Continuity: Directs information security, data management, system reliability, backup, disaster recovery, and related policies and standards to protect City systems and information.
Customer & Technology Support: Oversees centralized help desk, system maintenance, technical support, and user training services to ensure responsive and effective technology support across City departments.

The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate for Director of Information Technology (U) is a strategic and collaborative leader with a strong administrative background and extensive knowledge of information technology systems. They will bring a clear vision for the department, and a demonstrated ability to successfully deliver complex technology projects on schedule.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in management information systems, computer science, business administration, or a closely related field; and at least ten (10) years of progressively responsible information technology experience, at least four (4) of which were in a management capacity; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Experience in a governmental setting is preferred.
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid California driver’s license is required.

Employees work under typical office conditions, and the noise level is usually quiet. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear, both in person and by telephone, use hands to manipulate, handle, and feel computers and standard business equipment, and reach with hands and arms.
