Description
Summary of the Role
The IT Manager (Data Systems) is a hands-on leadership role responsible for the architecture, engineering, administration, integration, security, and governance of the company’s database, Enterprise Data Warehouse, and SharePoint platforms. The position is the primary technical owner for the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), Microsoft Fabric and related data pipelines, database platforms, SharePoint Online, and Nintex automation solutions.
Reporting to the IT Director, this manager leads and develops a small team of data and SharePoint professionals while remaining directly involved in design, development, and operational support. The role ensures reliable data movement from enterprise source systems through the EDW and data platforms to downstream consumers systems.
This position partners with report developers and business teams by providing trusted data models, governed datasets, performance support, platform standards, and reliable source-to-consumption data services.
Key Responsibilities
• Team Leadership and Delivery: Manage, mentor, and develop Data and SharePoint team members; prioritize work, assign ownership, review technical solutions, and balance project delivery with operational support and hands-on contribution.
• EDW and Data Architecture: Own the architecture, development, documentation, and ongoing modernization of the Enterprise Data Warehouse and Microsoft Fabric environment. Establish scalable patterns for ingestion, transformation, storage, semantic readiness, and data consumption.
• Data Pipeline Engineering: Design, build, monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize ETL/ELT pipelines that move data from Epicor Prophet 21 and other enterprise applications into the EDW, Fabric, and downstream systems. Implement data-quality controls, logging, alerting, and recoverability.
• Database Administration: Provide hands-on administration for supported database platforms, including security, access, performance monitoring, capacity planning, backup and recovery coordination, patching coordination, job scheduling, and production issue resolution.
• Enterprise Data Integrations: Lead the design, development, and support of secure integrations with enterprise platforms such as Workday, Active Directory / Microsoft Entra ID, SugarCRM, Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint, Epicor Prophet 21, and other business systems and vendor platforms.
• SharePoint Platform and Development: Own SharePoint Online architecture, administration, governance, security, site and information architecture, custom solutions, integrations, and lifecycle management. Use ShareGate or comparable tools for migrations, structural management, reporting, and security reviews.
• Workflow and Process Automation: Architect, build, and support enterprise workflows and forms using Nintex Automation Cloud and related automation technologies. Improve reliability, maintainability, documentation, and business continuity of critical workflows.
• Power BI Enablement and Governance: Support the Power BI ecosystem through governed data sources, reusable datasets or semantic models, gateway and refresh coordination, performance troubleshooting, security alignment, lineage, and development standards. Business report and dashboard development remains outside this role’s direct ownership.
• AI and Intelligent Automation: Evaluate and apply AI technologies to data management, knowledge discovery, workflow automation, data quality, developer productivity, and business-process improvement. Partner with security and business stakeholders to ensure responsible, governed, and practical AI adoption.
• Security, Governance, and Compliance: Implement role-based access, least-privilege controls, data protection standards, auditability, retention practices, and platform governance across data, database, integration, SharePoint, and automation environments.
• Operational Reliability: Establish monitoring, support procedures, documentation, disaster-recovery readiness, incident response, root-cause analysis, and service-level expectations for critical data and collaboration platforms.
• Roadmap and Vendor Management: Develop platform roadmaps, recommend investments, manage technical vendors and partners, assess solution designs, and communicate risks, dependencies, status, and business impact to IT and business leadership.
Skills and Abilities
• Data Engineering and Architecture: Strong knowledge of dimensional modeling, data warehousing, lakehouse concepts, ETL/ELT, orchestration, metadata, lineage, data quality, and source-to-consumption architecture.
• Microsoft Data Platform: Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric and/or Azure data services such as Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Data Lake Storage, and related monitoring and security capabilities.
• Database Engineering: Advanced SQL skills and practical experience administering, tuning, securing, and supporting relational database platforms, preferably Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL.
• Integration Engineering: Experience with APIs, file-based interfaces, identity integrations, connectors, service accounts, authentication patterns, scheduling, error handling, and integration monitoring.
• SharePoint and Automation: Deep proficiency with SharePoint Online, ShareGate, Nintex Automation Cloud, and Microsoft 365 integration patterns. Familiarity with Power Automate and Power Platform is desirable.
• Power BI Platform Knowledge: Working knowledge of Power BI architecture, gateways, refresh, security, semantic models, performance, deployment practices, and governance.
• Applied AI Awareness: Practical familiarity with generative AI, copilots, AI-assisted development, retrieval-augmented generation, intelligent document processing, or machine-learning-enabled automation, including awareness of security, privacy, and responsible AI considerations.
• Leadership and Communication: Ability to lead a small technical team, set priorities, coach staff, collaborate across IT and business functions, and explain technical risks and decisions in clear business language.
• Analytical Problem Solving: Ability to trace data discrepancies and system failures across source applications, integrations, pipelines, databases, the EDW, and consuming platforms to identify root causes and sustainable corrective actions.
Minimum Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Engineering, Data Analytics, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Experience: 7+ years of progressive experience across data engineering, data warehousing, database administration, enterprise integrations, SharePoint, or related platforms, including at least 2 years in a supervisory, technical-lead, or player-coach capacity.
• Data Platform Experience: Demonstrated hands-on experience designing and supporting enterprise data pipelines, data warehouses, databases, and integrations in production environments.
• Microsoft Ecosystem: Demonstrated experience with Microsoft 365, SharePoint Online, SQL-based data platforms, and Azure or Microsoft Fabric technologies.
• Governance and Security: Experience implementing data and platform security, access governance, operational controls, documentation, monitoring, and support standards.
• AI Experience: Experience using or implementing AI-enabled technologies in a business or technical environment, with the ability to evaluate suitable use cases, limitations, data requirements, and governance considerations.
Preferred Qualifications
• Enterprise Applications: Experience integrating with Epicor Prophet 21 or another distribution-focused ERP, Workday, Microsoft Entra ID / Active Directory, SugarCRM, and Microsoft 365 services.
• Platform Depth: Experience with Microsoft Fabric, SQL Server, ShareGate, Nintex Automation Cloud, Power Automate, and Power BI platform administration or governance.
• AI and Automation: Experience with Microsoft Copilot technologies, Azure AI services, AI Builder, intelligent document processing, RAG solutions, or automation solutions that incorporate generative AI or machine learning.
• Certifications: Relevant Microsoft certifications in Azure data engineering, Fabric, database administration, Power Platform, SharePoint, security, or AI; Nintex certifications are also desirable.
• Industry Knowledge: Understanding of wholesale distribution operations and data domains such as customers, products, inventory, pricing, orders, purchasing, finance, and delivery performance.
Success Measures
• Reliable, secure, and supportable data pipelines, databases, integrations, SharePoint solutions, and Nintex workflows.
• Clear ownership, documentation, monitoring, recoverability, and lifecycle management for critical platforms.
• Trusted and traceable enterprise data that enables analytics and Power BI without transferring report-development ownership to this role.
• A practical roadmap for Microsoft Fabric, EDW modernization, SharePoint, automation, and governed AI adoption.
• Improved team capability, reduced key-person dependency, and effective communication with business and IT stakeholders.
