Responsibilities

We are seeking a Data Engineer to design, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines on Databricks for our Insurance client. You will work as part of a dedicated Data Engineering team delivering data products for analytics utilizing insurance line of business data to enable high-quality, trusted data solutions that drive data-driven decision-making for the business.This role combines hands-on engineering, data modeling, and cross-functional collaboration, with a focus on modern data engineering practices. You will work closely with data analysts and BI teams, actuarial and underwriting teams, software engineers and platform teams.

• Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines using Databricks (Spark)
• Develop robust, fault-tolerant, and performant pipelines to transform data from: policy administration systems, claims systems, third-party data providers
• Develop and maintain notebooks, jobs, and workflows within Databricks
• Optimize Spark jobs for performance and cost efficiency
• Work with Delta Lake to manage incremental processing, schema evolution, data versioning
• Implement Medallion data layers (bronze/silver/gold architecture)
• Build data models to support: reporting and dashboards, actuarial analysis, regulatory reporting
• Implement and monitor data quality checks and validations
• Ensure compliance with insurance and regulatory standards (e.g., GDPR, Solvency II where applicable)
• Translate business requirements into technical data solutions
• Perform root cause analysis for data issues

Qualifications

Technical skills

• Strong experience with Databricks and Apache Spark (PySpark or Scala)
• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred; AWS/GCP also acceptable)
• Proficiency in Python and SQL
• Experience working with:
  • Delta Lake or similar storage formats
  • Data pipeline orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, Azure Data Factory)
• Understanding of data modeling techniques
• Experience building ETL/ELT pipelines at scale
• Knowledge of data warehousing concepts
• Familiarity with data quality frameworks and testing approaches

Soft Skills

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
• Ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Good communication and documentation skills
• Strong attention to detail and data accuracy

Nice to Have

• Understanding of insurance business processes
• Experience working with claims, policy, or underwriting data, regulatory reporting datasets is a plus
• Experience with real-time/streaming pipelines (Kafka, Structured Streaming)
• Knowledge of data governance and catalog tools (e.g., Unity Catalog)
• Exposure to CI/CD pipelines for data engineering
• Experience with BI tools (Power BI, Tableau)
