Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

As a Paralegal with the Public Fiduciary, you will support guardianship, conservatorship, and estate matters that help protect the rights and well-being of individuals who may not have anyone else to advocate for them.

Working alongside Fiduciaries, attorneys, investigators, and court staff, you will prepare legal documents, conduct research, manage case materials, and help ensure court requirements and deadlines are met. We Require

  • Associate’s degree in paralegal studies or legal assistance and two years of experience as a paralegal, legal assistant, or work involving legal procedures, terminology, or administration OR

  • Certificate in Paralegal Studies + Two years of legal support experience needed OR

  • Bachelor’s or higher in paralegal studies or legal assistant– no experience needed OR

  • Bachelor’s or higher in an unrelated field + an Associate or Certification in paralegal studies – no experience needed OR

  • Two years of paralegal experience + Two years of legal support experience

We Also Value

  • Professional work experience with probate court, including but not limited to guardianships, conservatorships, and decedent’s estates

  • Experience managing high caseloads and working with multiple staff members simultaneously

Job Contributions

  • Collects, analyzes, organizes, summarizes, and makes recommendations regarding probate materials for Public Fiduciary legal cases to assist the Fiduciaries

  • Maintains case files on open litigation, closed cases, and other legal records to keep the department organized and in compliance with statutory requirements  

  • Prepares draft probate pleadings, including petitions, motions, and orders for the Director and MCAO Civil Attorney to review; files documents with the court to ensure deadlines are met

  • Assists with the preparation of various types of legal proceedings, such as creating exhibits, charts/indices, etc. to support the Fiduciaries and MCAO Attorneys 

  • Maintains current knowledge of statutes, case law, and legal procedures to provide up-to-date information and recommendations to the Fiduciaries and MCAO Attorneys 

  • Collaborates with staff, MCAO Civil Attorney, court staff, and external parties on Public Fiduciary legal cases to ensure positive outcomes 

  • Researches legal precedents and case applicability utilizing computerized research tools and specialized software; Summarizes and provides findings to Fiduciaries and MCAO Attorneys to aid in case management 

  • Makes recommendations for new approaches to current department processes to help keep practices updated and in compliance with the courts  

  • Produces high-quality work by utilizing critical reading comprehension skills, excellent writing, and grammatical and analytical thinking skills 

  • Trains and mentors other paralegals and legal secretaries on department processes, policies, and procedures 

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid or alternative work schedule options are based on business needs after the training period

  • Work is performed in an indoor office environment serving an extremely fast-paced fiduciary business

  • Interruptions, time pressures, a high volume of work, handling multiple or complicated tasks, unscheduled and frequently changing tasks, accuracy, decision making, concentration, vigilance, teamwork, working in close proximity to others, and public contact may be constant occurrences

  • May be required to lift up to 40 pounds from floor to waist and up to 30 pounds from waist to shoulder

  • May be required to carry, push/pull up to 10 pounds a distance of 20 feet
