Intern – Laboratory Testing Support

ROLE SUMMARY

This is a six-month internship with structured assignments and increasing ownership. Strong performers may be considered for future full-time opportunities based on business need and role availability.  This Intern will support test planning and reporting product and system testing at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) and ON.energy’s Houston laboratory. The intern will help turn engineering requirements into practical test plans, organize execution evidence, prepare clear draft reports by giving support to the laboratory engineers. This is a variable-term, remote R&D internship with optional travel.

Please Note: This is a remote position. Optional travel may include visits to NLR, Houston, or other test locations. On-site participation is subject to applicable access, training, and safety requirements.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Test Plans: Help develop test plans and procedures that define the objective, required software/hardware setup and acceptance criteria. Maintain clear links between requirements, test activities, and results.
• Readiness: Support test readiness and daily planning by tracking key resources, dependencies, and open items.
• Execution Records: Maintain clear test logs and organize the supporting data, observations, and evidence for each test.
• Coordination: Keep plans and status information current across R&D, Commissioning Engineering, and external consultants. Follow up on missing inputs and review actions with the responsible technical leads.
• Issues: Document deviations and open questions for engineering review. Support test plan revisions and retest planning when needed.
• Data Analysis Tool: Build a reusable tool that can ingest lab test data in different formats and produce consistent, report-ready graphs. Document the tool so future data sets can be processed efficiently and results can be reproduced.
• Data Review: Check data quality, create plots, interpret and compare measured results with defined criteria under engineering direction.
• Reporting: Draft test reports and concise campaign summaries covering results, issues, and next steps. Clearly distinguish measured facts from interpretation and open questions.
• Document Control: Maintain organized revisions and source evidence in designated ON.energy repositories.
• Process Improvement: Help improve reusable templates and workflows for test planning, evidence management, and reporting.

 

KEY REQUIREMENTS

• Education: Currently pursuing or recently completed a B.S. or M.S. in electrical engineering, data science, or a related technical field.
• Technical Background: Coursework or project experience related to power systems, energy storage, power electronics or laboratory testing is preferred.
• Tools: Working knowledge of Excel and experience with Python, MATLAB/Simulink, or a similar data-analysis tool.
• Core Skills: Strong technical writing, attention to detail, and the ability to organize engineering information across a distributed team.
• Safety and Confidentiality: Follow laboratory safety, access, and confidentiality requirements. The intern will not perform energized electrical work unless a separately qualified and authorized user is present.
