What You'll Do – Tool and Die Maker
As a Tool and Die Maker – Manual Machinist, you will use conventional machining equipment, precision measurement tools, and mechanical repair skills to manufacture, modify, maintain, and rebuild tooling and components used in high-speed metal can manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Manufacture, repair, modify, refurbish, and rebuild dies, precision tooling, fixtures, and mechanical components for high-speed can-making machinery.
- Operate manual machining equipment, including Bridgeport mills, manual lathes, grinders, and other conventional machine tools.
- Perform precision machining and tool and die making using blueprints, mechanical drawings, and work instructions.
- Set up and operate manual machine tools to produce parts and tooling to exact specifications.
- Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and machining specifications.
- Use micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring instruments to inspect components and maintain tight manufacturing tolerances.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and rebuild gearboxes, pumps, and other industrial production equipment.
- Perform welding, plasma cutting, and other fabrication tasks as needed for tooling and equipment repairs.
- Calculate raw material requirements and select appropriate materials for machining and tooling projects.
- Perform quality inspections to ensure tooling, dies, and machined components meet established specifications.
- Catalog, organize, and maintain production tooling to improve accessibility, inventory control, and operational efficiency.
- Support maintenance and production teams with tooling repairs, mechanical troubleshooting, and equipment improvements.
- Operate CNC equipment, where required, to support tooling and machining activities.
- Safely operate plant equipment, including forklifts, lifts, and booms, as needed.
- Follow all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
What We're Looking For
We are seeking a detail-oriented, mechanically skilled Tool and Die Maker who takes pride in precision workmanship and enjoys building, repairing, and improving industrial tooling.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Trade school or technical machining education preferred.
- Two or more years of experience in tool and die making, manual machining, manufacturing, or a related industrial machining environment.
- Hands-on experience operating manual machine tools, such as Bridgeport mills, lathes, or grinders.
- Experience building, repairing, maintaining, or rebuilding dies, tooling, or precision mechanical components.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and machining specifications.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and precision measurement skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize assignments, and meet deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and workplace safety.
Preferred Experience
Experience in the following areas is highly valued:
- Tool and Die Maker or Toolmaker.
- Manual Machinist or Precision Machinist.
- Conventional milling, turning, and grinding.
- Bridgeport mill operation and manual lathe operation.
- Die making, die maintenance, tooling repair, and tooling rebuilds.
- Precision machining and dimensional inspection.
- Mechanical troubleshooting and industrial equipment repair.
- Welding, fabrication, and plasma cutting.
- Gearbox, pump, and production machinery repair.
- Metalworking, manufacturing, or high-speed production equipment.
