Description
OUTDOOR RECREATION: Plans, promotes, implements, and evaluates outdoor recreation programs for participants of all ages and abilities in front country outdoor settings. Provides instruction in outdoor adventure activities and skills while promoting safe, ethical, and environmentally responsible recreation practices. Programs may include kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddleboarding (SUP), rock climbing, mountain biking, skateboarding, hiking, caving, and other seasonal or high adventure activities. Instructors are expected to demonstrate competency in their assigned activity or activities and provide programs that are safe, engaging, and responsive to the needs of participants. This is a position that typically requires evening and weekend work, with schedules established in coordination with the supervisor.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: Youth Development is seeking a Recreation Instructor to be responsible for planning, implementing, leading and facilitating youth development and recreation programs and activities at various Parks and Recreation community centers. The successful candidate will implement the risk management plan to protect participants and staff and assist in the recruitment and training of staff and volunteers. Requires knowledge of youth development and community activities including but not limited to: fitness and movement, art, nature study, crafts and be able to assist children with homework assignments. Must have the ability to develop new creative programs, build and maximize neighborhood and community relations, and utilize effective communications (both orally and in writing).
COMMUNITY RECREATION : Community Recreation Instructors should have experience and/or knowledge of educational methodologies and a broad understanding of community focused programming. Instructors must be able to work effectively with people of all ages and abilities while providing safe, engaging, and enjoyable recreation programs that are responsive to the needs of the group. Community recreation programming may include, but is not limited to, indoor fitness and wellness, therapeutic wellness, arts, music and dance, community enrichment classes, community special events, and trips and tours. Instructors must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and competency necessary to effectively lead their preferred activity or activities of focus. Work hours will vary based on program needs and will typically include evenings and weekends. The work schedule will be established in coordination with the supervisor.
Depending on assignment, one must be able to collect registration documents, write receipts, make deposits, and complete assignments on computer. Minimum requirements include any combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of college with emphasis on recreation program planning and implementation and one year experience in a day-care or after-school setting as well as possession of a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Certifications required upon request-ARC Standard First Aid and CPR.
OUTDOOR RECREATION-
Plans, promotes, implements, and evaluates outdoor recreation programs and activities for participants of all ages and abilities.
Provides instruction in assigned outdoor adventure activities and develops participants' knowledge and skills while maintaining a safe and positive program environment.
Researches and develops new program ideas based on community interests, seasonal opportunities, and emerging outdoor recreation activities.
Assists with program preparation, including the appropriate use and care of equipment and facilities.
Follows established risk management, safety, and emergency procedures to protect participants, staff, equipment, and facilities.
Applies appropriate outdoor recreation safety practices and environmental stewardship principles during program activities.
Supports safe and appropriate transportation practices when transportation is required as part of a recreation program, consistent with established department procedures and safety requirements.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT:
Plans, organizes, and leads youth development and recreation programs and activities for children and youth at the Eureka Center.
Develops and implements new and creative programs and activities that respond to the interests and developmental needs of participants.
Facilitates age appropriate activities, including fitness and movement, art, nature study, crafts, educational activities, and homework assistance.
Establishes and maintains positive relationships with children, youth, families, volunteers, staff, neighborhood residents, and community partners.
Assists with the recruitment and training of staff and volunteers involved in youth development and recreation programs.
Follows and implements established risk management and safety procedures to protect participants and staff and maintain a safe program environment.
Collects participant registration documents, prepares receipts, makes deposits, and completes routine administrative assignments using a computer.
Communicates program information and other relevant information clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Works collaboratively with staff and volunteers to support the effective delivery of youth development and recreation programs.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
COMMUNITY RECREATION RECREATION INSTRUCTOR:
Plans, develops, promotes, implements, and evaluates community recreation programs and activities for participants of all ages and abilities.
Provides instruction in assigned recreation activities and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and competency necessary to effectively lead the assigned activity or activities.
Conducts research to identify community interests and develop new or improved program ideas.
Assists with evaluating programs and recommends changes or improvements based on participant needs, program outcomes, and community interests.
Follows established risk management and safety procedures to protect participants, staff, equipment, and facilities.
Responds appropriately to safety concerns and emergency situations and takes appropriate action to maintain a safe program environment.
Promotes safe, ethical, and environmentally responsible practices during recreation activities.
Supports safe and appropriate transportation practices when transportation is required as part of a recreation program, consistent with established department procedures and safety requirements.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Experience and/or knowledge of educational methodologies and outdoor recreation programming.
Broad knowledge of natural sciences and principles relevant to outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship.
Demonstrated knowledge, skill, and competency in one or more outdoor recreation activities offered through the program.
Ability to work effectively with people of all ages and abilities in front country outdoor settings.
Ability to research, develop, and implement programs with limited supervision.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of first aid procedures, outdoor recreation safety practices, and precautions necessary to conduct recreational activities safely.

Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as required by program needs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Depending on assignment, any combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of college with emphasis on outdoor recreation program planning and implementation and evaluation. Proven experience in
using and teaching appropriate safety considerations, technical adventure skills, understanding participant expectations and discipline in a recreation setting.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Appropriate certifications, as applicable, in outdoor and high adventure activities. Current First Aid and CPR certification or within 30 days of hire. Must be available weekends.
