A Day in the Life
Join Medtronic as a Mechanical Design Engineer and contribute to the design and development of innovative mechanical and electromechanical medical products and systems. In this role, you will apply mechanical engineering principles, technical skills, teamwork, and creative problem-solving to support the development of high-quality products intended to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.You will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team and gain hands-on experience across different stages of product development, including design, prototyping, testing, verification and validation, documentation, and transfer from Research and Development (R&D) to manufacturing. This is an entry-level individual contributor role with opportunities to develop technical knowledge and engineering skills while working closely with experienced team members.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:
- Support the research, planning, design, verification, validation, and development of mechanical and electromechanical products and systems
- Create and modify mechanical designs, 3D models, engineering drawings, and related technical documentation using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools
- Participate in the design, qualification, documentation, and support of assembly, test, calibration fixtures, jigs, and engineering tools
- Support prototype builds, testing activities, technical investigations, and resolution of design, manufacturing, and product issues
- Contribute to Bill of Materials (BOM) creation, configuration control, engineering changes, work instructions, and testing documentation
- Support interactions with manufacturing teams and external vendors related to component selection, manufacturing, assembly, and product transfer
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams to gather, confirm, communicate, and document technical information
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline
- Fundamental understanding of mechanical design principles and common mechanical components, materials, and manufacturing processes
- Familiarity with CAD tools such as SolidWorks through academic, project, internship, or other relevant experience
- Basic knowledge of engineering drawings, tolerances, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach to engineering
- Effective English written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
Experience or exposure through academic projects, internships, co-op assignments, or previous employment involving mechanical product design, machined parts, sheet metal, plastics, mechanisms, prototyping, or testing would be beneficial. Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools, engineering change processes, medical device standards and regulations, process validation, root-cause analysis, electrical motors, pneumatic systems, or wiring and cabling would also be advantageous but is not required.
