Electrical Technician - Motors, Drives & Breakers

Position Overview

Novelis Oswego has an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Motor, Drives, and Breaker Technician! The primary focus of this position is the maintenance, service, repair and reliability of motors, drives, and breakers (m,d,&b).  Successful candidates will be fast learners and self-motivated, independent workers but know their limitations, and above all have a deep respect for electrical safety. They have the ability to work under pressure and the willingness to work in varying conditions. Electrical Technicians receive training in troubleshooting, technical procedures, and safety. They will help create, maintain, and repair the electronic components and equipment used in any machinery that involves electricity. They work on site to keep machinery and specialty equipment running correctly.

Responsibilities

• Use specialized measuring and diagnostic devices to evaluate equipment.
• Work with wires and other electrical components, and mechanical components, using hand tools while assembling, inspecting, rebuilding and reassembling m,d,&b.
• Repair and replace defective components in motors, generators, controllers, storage batteries, switchboards, conductors, switches and varied electrical fixtures
• Install, maintain and repair electrical, electromechanical, and electronic parts of machinery and equipment.
• Perform preventive repair and preservation of field, plant and shop electronic and electrical systems, equipment, and devices
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Plan and prepare work orders or instructions utilizing blueprints, sketches, and drawings.
• Utilize PdM data or equipment/process signal tracking software to monitor and assess equipment health and proactively respond to findings.
• Inspect, test, and troubleshoot motors, drives, and breakers (m,d,&b). See below for lists of test and inspection responsibilities.
• Oversee contractors working on m,d,&b, and act as liaison to leadership, engineers, technologists and procurement regarding their work and job status.
• Lead, support or assist (as a team member) in the replacement of DC motors with similar DC or AC motors (project).
• Responsible for planning, organizing, executing or supervising m,d,&b inspection and maintenance, especially AC/DC motor bearings, brush, and commutators.
• Must complete or oversee investigation, troubleshooting, testing, inspection, replacement, upgrade, and repairs of HV, MV, LV industrial switchgear (vac, air, & gas circuit breakers, transformers, disconnect switches, contactors, etc.).

• Work with Utilities/Facilities management and engineers in executing various mill shutdowns and power outages.
• Completion of PM’s, testing and inspection with high degree of quality, completed 100% correctly, with the utmost attention to detail paid.
• Coach, mentor and direct other electrical craftsmen and contractors on m,d,&b inspections, testing, maintenance and operation.
• Identify potential and implement appropriate new technologies to improve MTBF and MTTR for m,d,&b.

Qualifications

• Qualified Novelis Electrician PG7 or Higher (PG9 or higher preferred)

OR

• Completion of a two (2) year degree in Electrical Technology; and three (3) years experience as an electrician in a manufacturing setting          

OR

• Completion of an accredited apprentice program in same field with at least three (3) years experience as an electrician in a manufacturing setting        
• Flawless work history, with reputation for following up on all issues found
• Focus on doing it right the first time         
• Demonstrates good communication skills
• Must possess excellent team and people skills
• Previous crew leader assignment or demonstrated ability to work within a small team, working self directed at times, and also directing others or taking direction from other team members.
• Expected to work through the Skill Based Maintenance Pay system and SME policy job responsibilities.
• Able to use MS Word and Excel, with a willingness to build those skills and learn other softwares (IBA, etc…).
• Ability to read and comprehend electrical drawings, schematics, manuals, etc…
• Successful candidate must be very detail oriented and know their limitations (when to ask for help).

Must have experience in or continuously train to attain skills to complete the following:

• Maintenance or testing of AC synchronous / DC motors (large and small).
  • Megger (insulation test)
  • DLRO
  • Pole Drop test
  • Neutral Test
  • Span Test
  • Chamfering bars
  • Stoning commutator / undercutting
  • Inspection of motor components
  • Buss inspection
• Switchgear operation and maintenance (high, medium and low voltage).
  • Transformer testing and maintenance includes:
    • TTR
    • Megger (insulation test)
    • Winding test
    • Inspection of core / buss (high and low side)
  • Operation and maintenance of electrical drives.
  • Breaker rebuilds or upgrades.
