  • Fixed term/secondment role ending June 2027, role based in Arthur’s Pass National Park

 te tūranga | About the role 

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join ourclose-knit team based out of the North Canterbury Office in Rangiora.

This is a crucial role providing visitors a great experience across North Canterbury, based in Arthur’s Pass this position will focus on the visitor assets within Arthur’s Pass National Park and surrounds including State Highway 73 campground and amenity areas from Kura Tāwhiti to Otira. 

You will join a team who take great pride in managing and maintaining this extensive recreational asset base for both recreational users and domestic and international tourists. 

The primary focus is on visitor safety and providing quality experiences for all who explore the region. 

Core components of this role include: 

  • Delivering back country track and hut maintenance work.  This can regularly involve up to five-day back country trips dependant on the season 

  • Delivering front country track and structures work 

  • Using small machinery, chainsaw and scrub cutting equipment 

  • Management and maintenance of conservation campsites, picnic and car park areas, toilets and water supplies 

  • Visitor risk management 

  • This role is primarily field-based but will include office- based duties such as data entry, information management and use of Microsoft Office as a key part of the role.

If you have the following skills or attributes, we would love to hear from you: 

  • A love of the outdoors and a strong practical approach to problems  

  • A high level of fitness and sound experience/or practical knowledge of working in the backcountry 

  • Practical knowledge in general infrastructure maintenance, including basic carpentry and plumbing 

  • Computer and technologically savvy 

  • Confident interacting with people from all walks of life 

  • A genuine interest in the Departments management of Aotearoa's natural and cultural heritage, and an enthusiasm for engaging others in conservation 

  • A full NZ driver licence (class 1 and 2 desirable) 

  • Works co-operatively and collaboratively as a member of a team to accomplish goals and resolve problems 

Desired: 

  • Experience with small plant machinery (chainsaws and scrub-cutters) 

  • Building and construction skills 

  • Current First Aid Certificate 

  • Cultural competency and/or experience with working with mana whenua including an understanding of Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori

The salary range for this position is $61,189 - $67,446 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience. 

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
