The role is accountable for effective Occupational Health Centre operations, prevention and management of work-related ill health, fitness for duty and return-to-work decisions, emergency medical readiness, sickness-absence support, and compliance with company standards and applicable legal requirements.

Key Accountabilities

1. Occupational Health Centre Operations

  • Maintain medical equipment, emergency supplies, medicines, vaccines and consumables, including safe storage, stock control, replenishment and expiry monitoring.
  • Ensure compliant biomedical-waste management and maintain ambulance availability, equipment readiness, servicing and documentation.
  • Maintain accurate, secure and confidential electronic and paper health records.
  • Support OHC budget planning, expenditure monitoring and cost-effective use of resources.

2. Clinical Care, Injury Management and Medical Emergencies

  • Assess and treat illness and injury among employees and other eligible site personnel; provide first aid, arrange referral and follow up clinical outcomes.
  • Provide on-call medical support for defined emergency arrangements, including odd hours, and coordinate stabilization, ambulance transfer and referral to appropriate facilities.
  • Maintain site medical emergency preparedness for critical illness, casualties, multiple-injury events, infectious-disease outbreaks and business continuity scenarios.
  • Follow up hospitalized employees and coordinate continuity of care, rehabilitation and safe return to work.
  • Record and report first-aid cases, occupational injuries, illnesses and other reportable health events in accordance with company and statutory requirements.

3. Health Surveillance, Medical Examinations and Fitness for Duty

  • Conduct pre-employment, periodic and exit medical examinations in accordance with legal requirements, company policy and approved protocols.
  • Design, coordinate and evaluate risk-based health surveillance programmes using occupational hazards, exposure profiles and relevant clinical findings.
  • Take relevant medical and occupational histories, perform focused examinations, arrange investigations and determine whether a health condition affects safe work.
  • Review sickness certificates and provide clear, evidence-based fitness for duty opinions, including restrictions, workplace adjustments, rehabilitation and return-to-work plans.
  • Manage sickness absence and complex cases involving disability, prolonged illness, injury or suspected work-related ill health, while maintaining medical confidentiality.

4. Occupational Risk Assessment and Occupational Illness Prevention

  • Conduct workplace inspections and task observations with SHE, occupational hygiene, engineering and operations teams to identify occupational health hazards and assess control effectiveness.
  • Interpret exposure and hygiene data and evaluate health risks from chemicals, dust, enzymes, noise, biological agents, radiation, ergonomics, shift work and psychosocial factors.
  • Assess possible links between work and symptoms, injury or illness; obtain specialist input and support investigation, documentation and reporting of suspected or confirmed occupational illness.
  • Recommend practical controls, ergonomics, job modifications and health-protection measures, and follow up implementation.
  • Ensure assessments and controls are inclusive and account for relevant needs associated with disability, women’s health, pregnancy, reproductive health and life stages, without discrimination and with appropriate confidentiality.
  • Analyse aggregated health and surveillance data to identify trends, higher-risk groups and priorities for preventive action.

5. Health Promotion and Wellbeing

  • Plan and evaluate evidence-based programmes addressing occupational health, non-communicable and communicable diseases, mental wellbeing and lifestyle risks.
  • Deliver employee education and individual counselling on prevention, early action, healthy behaviours and appropriate use of healthcare services.
  • Implement relevant company programmes, including ergonomics, travel health, psychosocial wellbeing and healthy nutrition.
  • Conduct or support periodic canteen audits covering food hygiene, nutritional quality, allergen controls and applicable health standards; document findings and follow corrective actions to closure.
  • Communicate clinical and technical information clearly to employees, managers and non-medical stakeholders.

6. Team Leadership, Governance and Stakeholder Management

  • Lead OHC personnel by allocating work, setting service standards, reviewing performance and providing coaching, supervision and operational support.
  • Train and assess OHC staff on clinical protocols, emergency response, company SOPs, documentation and service standards to support safe, effective care and sustained performance.
  • Maintain clinical governance, service quality, legal compliance, medical confidentiality and continuous improvement across OHC activities.
  • Maintain professional competence by keeping current with relevant medical and occupational health evidence, guidance, legislation and good practice, and by completing required training on company processes, standards and SOPs.
  • Maintain effective referral and emergency-support arrangements with specialists, hospitals, diagnostic centres and ambulance providers.
  • Partner with site leadership, Human Resources, SHE, operations and Global Health & Wellbeing teams to manage health risks and deliver agreed programmes.
  • Report agreed service, surveillance, programme and health-risk indicators to site and regional leadership, with actions and escalation where required.
