We provide excellent customer service to local hospitals and healthcare professionals and represent one of the most prominent companies in the Medical Waste Industry. Sharps Medical Waste Services is looking for a Regulatory Specialist to help keep our facilities and operations compliant with federal and state regulations. In this role, you'll support compliance across environmental regulations, medical and hazardous waste, DOT hazardous materials transportation, Board of Pharmacy licensing, and DEA controlled substances. You'll work with teams across the company to maintain permits and licenses, prepare for inspections, respond to regulatory agencies, and keep policies and training up to date. This role is a great fit for someone who is detail-oriented, enjoys working with regulations, and can turn complex requirements into clear, practical guidance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor federal and state regulations related to medical, biomedical, and hazardous waste, including EPA, RCRA, Clean Water Act, and state requirements.
  • Manage stormwater and wastewater compliance, including NPDES permits, SWPPPs, No Exposure certifications, POTW permits, sampling, reporting, and inspections.
  • Support DOT/PHMSA hazardous materials compliance, including packaging, labeling, shipping papers, manifests, employee training, and transporter permits.
  • Manage Board of Pharmacy licenses for pharmaceutical waste, including applications, renewals, reporting, inspections, and multi-state requirements.
  • Support DEA controlled-substance compliance, including registrations, storage and security, destruction documentation, inventories, recordkeeping, theft/loss reporting, and reverse distribution requirements.
  • Prepare for and support regulatory inspections and audits from the DEA, EPA, DOT, state agencies, and Boards of Pharmacy.
  • Respond to agency requests, inspection findings, deficiency notices, and other regulatory matters, and track corrective actions through completion.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and update company policies, SOPs, training, and compliance processes as requirements change.
  • Provide regulatory guidance to employees and customers on waste classification, segregation, labeling, containers, documentation, and state-specific requirements.
  • Document and communicate non-compliance issues, provide corrective guidance or retraining, and track recurring trends.
  • Develop and deliver regulatory training for employees and customers on environmental compliance, waste handling, packaging, labeling, stormwater, and spill response.
  • Maintain permits, licenses, training records, regulatory correspondence, waste disposal certificates, generator agreements, and other compliance documentation.
  • Maintain Sharps' State Registration & Regulatory Update Hub and help communicate regulatory changes across the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Public Health, Regulatory Affairs, Occupational Safety, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • 5+ years of experience in regulatory compliance, environmental health and safety (EHS), or a related compliance role.
  • Experience in medical/biohazardous waste, healthcare, environmental services, or hazardous materials transportation is a strong plus.
  • Working knowledge of at least one of the following areas: EPA/RCRA regulations, NPDES, DOT/PHMSA hazardous materials regulations, Board of Pharmacy licensing, or DEA controlled-substance requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain regulatory requirements to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience developing or delivering compliance training.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple permits, licenses, deadlines, and records.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn compliance and waste-management systems.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% to company facilities and customer locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • REHS, CHMM, DOT Hazmat, or another relevant certification.
  • Experience working directly with regulatory agencies.
  • Experience with NPDES, SWPPPs, wastewater permitting, sampling, or discharge monitoring.
  • Experience with Board of Pharmacy licensing or DEA registrations and controlled-substance compliance.
  • Knowledge of biomedical waste treatment, including autoclave and incineration.
  • Familiarity with FDA regulations, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, or 510(k) requirements.
