Overview

Possessing comprehensive carpentry knowledge, the Lead Carpenter assumes responsibility for the effective and safe completion of field work and a variety of other university carpentry projects.  The position’s responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to, leading other trade personnel during completion of carpentry related work tasks and projects, promptly resolving problems should they arise, assuring a safe work environment, completing shop work on schedule and communicating regularly with supervision and appropriate stakeholders.

Responsibilities

With minimal supervision, the incumbent shall perform the following duties and responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.

 

Operations 

  • Performs all facets of the carpentry trade in accordance with established codes and good work practices in a safe and effective manner
  • Accepts responsibilities for work assignments.
  • Reads, understands and interprets technical and construction related documents (drawings, technical manuals and specifications) in order to determine equipment and materials required or appropriate methods of repair or installation.
  • Assists other trades’ mechanics in work projects or special assignments.
  • Carries out work in a timely manner using positive motivational and organizational skills.
  • Responds to emergency call-ins on campus and for emergency after-hours work as needed. On an acute basis, the lead carpenter may be classified as an essential employee, based on managerial discretion.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively to co-workers and management, both verbally and in writing.
  • Maintains clear records and photos of work activities and provides input for Maximo.
  • Performs carpentry tasks alongside assigned staff when not engaged in lead duties.

Administrative 

  • Investigates problems, evaluates alternate solutions and provides sound recommendations to supervisors.
  • Plans work and assumes responsibility for meeting deadlines, budgets, and quality assurance.
  • Makes sure work is performed in accordance with OSHA and EHS safety standards and applicable building codes. Ensures proper care in the safe use and maintenance of vehicles, tools and equipment.

Leadership 

  • Assists and supports the Supervisor and Assistant Supervisors in organizing, training, and leading shop personnel to ensure high quality work with maximum efficiency and adherence to safe work policies.
  • Provides input to supervisors for employee assessment and appraisal.
  • Interprets and implements university policies and procedures. 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform essential duties in a professional manner.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability needed.

  • Must have a minimum of least ten (10) years’ experience as a journey level carpenter.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalency (GED).
  • Possess a sound technical background as well as good communication and leadership skills.
  • A documented excellent overall work and attendance record.
  • A working knowledge of applicable building codes and regulations, including safe work practices and policies.
  • Demonstrated willingness to complete tasks in a professional and timely manner.
  • Possesses excellent communication skills and a willingness to communicate relevant information to the leadership team.
  • Has the ability to work side by side with members of other trades while carrying out lead duties.
  • Is self-reliant and finds solutions to routine problems encountered during assigned tasks.
  • Must be willing to serve in a call-in capacity for emergency service and be available for scheduled overtime if necessary to complete an assignment.

Physical Demands:

The following tasks and skills that would be necessary for any person to fulfill while working in any of the job classifications within the carpenter/glazier shop in the Facilities/Operations department.

  • Stand or walk up to two hours at one time for 6 to 8 hours per day.
  • Sit for less than two hours during an eight-hour day.
  • Operate a motor vehicle or heavy equipment (e.g., forklift, high reach, cherry picker) occasionally (less the 33% of the workday).
  • Lift or carry up to 50 pounds frequently (34 to 66% of the workday) and up to 100 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday).
  • Lift up to 50 pounds in a full range of motions from floor to overhead and lift up to 100 pounds to waist height.
  • Use hands for simple grasping, pushing or pulling frequently (34% to 66% of the workday).
  • Occasionally push or pull with forces up to 100 pounds, bend, squat, kneel, lie down, crawl, knee stand, dig, or use hammer drills (up to 33% of the workday).
  • Frequently push or pull with forces up to 50 pounds, climb stairs and ladders, or reach overhead (34 to 66% of the workday).
  • Work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions.
  • Possess the ability to work at heights with physical agility and a full range of motion, with ability to maintain balance.
