JOB OVERVIEW:
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant is responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to patients with complex cardiac and thoracic conditions. Responsibilities include patient evaluation, surgical first assist duties, postoperative management, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Ensures provision of patient care in an organized and timely manner.
- Utilizes PA care standards when planning and implementing patient care.
- Communicates appropriate information regarding patient conditions to those who require the information including, physicians, management and other staff.
- Safely carries out physician’s orders correctly and promptly, documenting all activities.
- Initiates and participates in patient and family education. Assesses learning needs according to patient’s level of understanding and readiness to learn.
- Displays an understanding of each patient’s cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturity in assessments, treatment, and care.
- Takes part in patient phone calls and communicates any problems to the appropriate person.
- Maintains competencies to function in PA role within specific areas.
- Maintain competencies in venous diseases and applicable procedures/techniques to treat venous diseases including Ablation, Phlebectomy, Medical Sclerotherapy, and Varithena Chemical Ablation.
- Maintain competencies in cosmetic procedures to include administering Fillers, Botox and utilization of Cutera Laser machine, Cosmetic Sclerotherapy
- Expertise safety principles, asepsis, sterile technique and universal precautions.
- Assesses, anticipates, and implement appropriate care throughout the patient's treatment process.
- Performs the following procedures: Phlebectomy, Ultrasound guided Sclerotherapy, Sclerotherapy, Varithena injections
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Correlates clinical data with patient care. Provides the patient with care measures congruent with his/her age, sex and health status.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, prioritizes work to meet the changing needs of the department.
- Document and perform office visits and procedures in assigned areas based on standards of care and practice, and policies and procedures. Documents all information in the EMR/EHR.
- Adhere to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for confidentiality, Infection Control, Safety (OSHA), attendance, punctuality, and personal appearance.
- Serve as a role model and mentor, providing direction and leadership to other staff.
- Demonstrates understanding of established emergency procedures for the Center.
- Demonstrates the ability to direct and provide patient care in emergency situations.
- Demonstrates the ability to make decisions concerning Center-based problems.
- Participates in the orientation of other midlevel providers and ancillary staff as requested.
- Participates in developing standardized patient education programs.
- Participates in Quality Improvement activities including identification of opportunities for cost reductions and efficiencies
- Works to achieve and maintain regulatory certification and accreditation of the Center.
- Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for professional practice and for continued professional growth and development through printed material or other sources and by attending in-services and seminars as appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Certification Requirements
- Required: Maintains current State of FL PA-C licensure.
- Required: Maintains ACLS/BLS certification for Health Care Providers.
- Preferred: Minimum 3 years of experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery and EVH
Physical Requirements:
- Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to use a stethoscope and respond to verbal questions.
- Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone. Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
- Other: Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required. Adequate physical ability including sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite health care service, including injections. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift. Requires exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids.
