The R&D Mechanical Engineer III – Advanced Surgical is a critical member of our Advanced Surgical division's R&D team, based in Denver, CO. The engineer will have immediate opportunities to contribute to new product development with a focus on minimally invasive surgical technologies designed to deliver real benefits to surgeons, hospitals, and their patients.
Advanced Surgical products include: Advanced insufflation systems, Advanced energy systems, Advanced smoke management systems, and Laparoscopic surgical instruments
Responsibilities:
Design, develop, test, and support high-quality and reliable disposable and/or capital medical products for surgical procedures, focusing on projects of moderate to high complexity.
Independently execute multiple phases of the product development lifecycle, including design, development, component procurement, assembly, verification, validation, and manufacturing activities according to medical device standards and regulations.
Participate in structured problem-solving and root cause investigations using data and systematic methodologies.
Execute conceptual and detailed designs, CAD modeling, prototyping, and troubleshooting with a comprehensive understanding of the entire product development cycle.
Perform design analyses including theoretical calculations, materials selection, tolerance analyses, design-for-manufacturing assessments and stress calculations.
Develop and execute test protocols, analyze results, and author technical reports and presentations with minimal guidance.
Apply sound engineering judgment and data-driven decision making to evaluate design options, identify risks, and recommend solutions.
Plan and execute verification and validation testing while ensuring appropriate documentation and traceability.
Engage with customers and internal stakeholders to understand user needs and translate requirements into practical engineering solutions.
Contribute to project planning, scheduling, and budget activities in collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and successful execution.
Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, safety requirements, quality control procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Communicate technical concepts, design solutions, tradeoffs, and risks effectively to cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
Assist with quality management system reviews and participate in external audits to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
Contribute to procedural updates, engineering best practices, and development of job aids that improve team effectiveness and consistency.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering or related field
5+ years of engineering work experience (3+ years with a related Master’s degree) with 3-D CAD software such as SolidWorks or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Strong knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing creation.
Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles, including tolerance analysis, materials selection, and stress analysis.
Experience designing for manufacturing, such as machining, injection molding, and assembly.
Ability to collaborate effectively across functions and influence project outcomes.
Working knowledge of statistics and data analysis techniques.
Experience applying structured problem-solving methods such as root cause analysis, DOE, and FMEA.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, verbal, and technical communication skills
Experience working in a regulated environment, such as FDA 21 CFR 820 or similar.
Strong working knowledge of design controls and medical device development processes.
Experience developing new products from concept through commercialization.
Experience leading technical activities within small to medium cross-functional teams
Experience using Minitab.
Working knowledge of FEA and CFD tools.
Intermediate knowledge of project management principles and budgeting.
Experience conducting root cause investigations and applying structured problem-solving methods.
Understanding of medical device regulations and risk management processes.

Disclosure as required by applicable law, the annual salary range for this position is $87,600- $135,800. The actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, work experience, education and skill level. The salary range is CONMED’s good faith belief at the time of this posting.
