The Senior Commercial Portfolio Specialist provides advanced oversight of the commercial loan portfolio, ensuring portfolio quality, documentation integrity, timely risk identification, and effective portfolio administration. This role serves as a subject matter expert for portfolio monitoring, loan review processes, tickler management, renewals, participation documentation, reporting, and audit readiness. The Senior Commercial Portfolio Specialist is responsible for identifying trends, escalating emerging risks, strengthening portfolio controls, and providing guidance to Commercial Portfolio Specialists, Credit Analysts, and lending partners to support sound credit administration and regulatory compliance.
Essential Functions
- Lead periodic commercial loan and relationship reviews, ensuring reviews are completed accurately, consistently, and within established timelines.
- Provide advanced analysis of borrower and guarantor financial performance, including identification of trends, repayment concerns, covenant issues, documentation gaps, and emerging portfolio risk.
- Oversee the quality and completeness of commercial loan files, ensuring required financial statements, supporting documentation, due diligence, and credit-related information are current and properly documented.
- Monitor borrower performance against approved loan terms, including usage, indebtedness, deposit expectations, covenant requirements, and other relationship commitments.
- Identify financial, operational, or documentation exceptions and coordinate appropriate escalation, action planning, and default communication when necessary.
- Serve as a senior resource for complex portfolio matters, including deteriorating credits, participation loans, renewals, reporting needs, and documentation issues.
- Provide guidance, training, and mentoring to Commercial Portfolio Specialists, Credit Analysts, and other team members to support consistency, accuracy, and strong portfolio administration practices.
- Participation Loan Oversight
- Oversee documentation processes for purchased and sold participation loans to ensure required information is obtained, provided, reviewed, and maintained in a timely manner.
- Coordinate with participating credit unions and internal lending partners to resolve documentation gaps, reporting needs, and follow-up items.
- Ensure participation loan files remain current, complete, and audit-ready.
- Provide oversight of the financial document tickler process to ensure accuracy, integrity, and timely follow-up.
- Review tickler reporting for trends, recurring deficiencies, and potential areas of risk.
- Distribute periodic tickler reports to lending staff and leadership, highlighting key concerns, overdue items, and recommended follow-up.
- Oversee member correspondence and internal follow-up related to upcoming, past due, or unresolved tickler items.
- Recommend process improvements to strengthen documentation tracking, accountability, and portfolio monitoring.
- Lead the preparation and review of recurring portfolio reports, including quarterly board reporting, problem loan reporting, delinquency review support, and interest rate stress testing reports.
- Analyze portfolio data to identify trends, emerging risks, documentation concerns, and opportunities to improve portfolio oversight.
- Ensure reporting is accurate, timely, and clearly communicates key portfolio indicators to leadership.
- Support leadership with ad hoc analysis, portfolio research, and reporting related to commercial loan performance and risk monitoring.
- Ensure commercial loan portfolio files are maintained in an audit-ready condition for internal, regulatory, and third-party reviews.
- Review documentation practices to confirm gaps are accurately reflected in the tickler system and appropriately escalated.
- Support audit and examination requests by coordinating documentation, validating information, and responding to portfolio-related inquiries.
- Identify opportunities to improve controls, documentation standards, and portfolio administration procedures.
- Maintain strong knowledge of applicable policies, laws, regulations, and internal standards related to commercial lending and portfolio administration.
- Ensure adherence to BSA, AML, USA Patriot Act, OFAC, and other applicable compliance requirements.
- Promote consistent application of credit administration standards, documentation expectations, and risk monitoring practices across the portfolio.
What You Bring 🎯
- High School Diploma or GED Required
- Bachelor's Degree Preferred
- 5-8 years similar or related experience
- Advanced knowledge of commercial lending principles, credit analysis, and portfolio risk management.
- Strong understanding of commercial loan documentation, participation lending, and portfolio administration.
- Ability to identify emerging credit risks, analyze financial performance, and recommend appropriate actions.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
- Effective communication and relationship management skills with the ability to collaborate across business units.
- Proven ability to mentor team members, manage competing priorities, and drive process improvements.
- Proficiency in commercial loan systems, financial analysis tools, and Microsoft Office applications, including Excel.

- Target hiring range $96,664.36 - $120,830.45 (Depending on experience and prior to any incentives this position is eligible for)
