Description
About Thunes
Thunes is a global leader in cross-border payments, enabling businesses and financial institutions to move money seamlessly across borders. Our global network connects billions of people and businesses, supporting payout options in over 130 countries. As we continue to scale our operations globally across the EU, UK, EMEA, APAC, and the Americas, robust financial risk governance and safeguarding compliance are critical to our long-term success.
Context of the role
As the Financial Risk, Financial Controls, and Safeguarding Manager, you will serve as a critical lead in Thunes' Second Line of Defense (2LoD). Reporting directly to the Global Head of Risk / CRO, you will design, implement, and oversee the global governance framework for financial risk, capital management, internal financial controls, and regulatory safeguarding. Working closely with our Group Finance and Treasury teams, you will ensure that Thunes effectively manages liquidity, FX, credit, counterparties, and safeguarding obligations across all regulated entities globally.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Risk Oversight (2LoD): Establish, maintain, and enhance the global financial risk management framework, policies, and risk appetite statements spanning liquidity, FX risk, market risk, credit/counterparty risk, and capital adequacy.
- Safeguarding Framework & Compliance: Provide rigorous 2LoD oversight of Thunes’ safeguarding obligations across major regulatory jurisdictions (including FCA in the UK, EU Regulators, MAS in Singapore, and frameworks across EMEA and the Americas). Conduct independent testing of safeguarding logic, reconciliation mechanisms, and fund segregation accuracy.
- Financial & Internal Controls: Evaluate, challenge, and strengthen internal financial controls and risk management processes managed by the First Line (Finance and Treasury). Partner with teams to embed a robust control culture and mitigate financial misstatement or operational leakage.
- Treasury & Capital Management Challenge: Review and provide independent challenge on Group Treasury activities, including investment policies, hedging strategies, bank counterparty concentration limits, and liquidity stress testing scenarios.
- Global Regulatory Alignment: Monitor evolving regulatory landscapes regarding safeguarding, operational resilience, and capital management across the UK, EU, APAC, EMEA, and Americas. Ensure Thunes’ policies adapt fluidly to local and regional compliance developments.
- Risk Reporting & Governance: Draft, compile, and present comprehensive financial risk and safeguarding dashboards for the Risk Committee, Board, and executive leadership, highlighting breaches, near-misses, and emerging vulnerabilities.
- Incident Management & Remediation: Investigate financial risk incidents and/or safeguarding issues, driving root cause analysis and monitoring the implementation of robust remediation plans by 1LoD partners.
Experience & Qualifications
- 10+ years of dedicated experience in Financial Risk, Treasury Risk, Financial Controls, or Risk Management within the Fintech, Cross-Border Payments, or Neobanking industries.
- Deep understanding of global regulatory safeguarding rules (e.g., UK FCA Payment Services Regulations, EU PSD2/PSD3, Singapore MAS Payment Services Act, and equivalent frameworks across the Americas and EMEA).
- Proven experience operating effectively within a Second Line of Defense (2LoD) framework, demonstrating strong analytical capability combined with the ability to independently collaborate and challenge 1LoD Finance and Treasury teams.
- Solid technical knowledge of treasury operations, FX risk, cash management, liquidity modeling, bank reconciliations, and capital adequacy metrics.
- International/global perspective with direct experience working across multi-jurisdictional and regulated payment ecosystems (EU, UK, EMEA, APAC, and Americas).
- Professional qualification (e.g., FRM, PRM, CFA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent corporate treasury/risk management credential) is highly desirable.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, capable of translating complex financial risk concepts into actionable governance insights for senior leadership and regulators.
- English / Spanish / French are a plus for the role.
