Who we are:
Business Unit overview:
The Claims department strives to lead the market by offering an efficient, and professional service to brokers and clients. Our goal is to become the most customer-focused, adaptable, and value-driven claims team available. We work proactively and flexibly to handle claims while upholding our integrity. The claims team partners closely with underwriting to ensure open communication and idea sharing. This team plays a key role in delivering products and services to our clients.
The London Market Claims team handles claims from both the company market and Lloyd’s of London, originating from three main areas: Marine, Energy and Construction, PFR or equivalent experience & Cyber, and Specialty. The London Market division underwrites more than $2bn GWP and strives to expand considerably in the coming years.
Part of Markel Group (NYSE – MKL) a Fortune 500 company with over 60 offices in 20+ countries, is a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, specialist advisory, and investment operations around the world.
What you’ll be doing:
- Drive the claims’ philosophy—“The most customer-focused, nimble, and value-adding claims team in the market”—by your individual work and, if applicable, through leading others. Accomplish this by setting and completing your objectives, taking part in team meetings, supervising DCAs and service providers, and interacting with key brokers.
- Take ownership for handling your claims following the MINT claims and reserving philosophy, Markel Style, the Claims Handling Manual, and all applicable laws and regulations. Bring up claims with your manager as appropriate for advice on strategy or reserving. Observe, review, and ensure targets are met.
- Drive, facilitate, and deliver a customer-focused approach to claims, measurable through speed of service and open, honest, and personable communications with all brokers and (re)insureds.
- Produce good quality and informative narratives and information on key claims and claims developments.
- Work closely with the underwriting team. Provide feedback on claims experiences, contract wordings, claims data, or feedback for renewals or new business. Interact with placing and claims brokers to build positive relationships and deepen knowledge about the quality of claims management at Markel.
- Show a willingness to lead claims across all business types handled by the team. This includes attending underwriting meetings, learning about each class, and building relationships with key collaborators involved in the claims process.
- Assist the Claims Manager with specific ad hoc projects and provide innovative ways of doing things as required. Be willing to assist beyond the day-to-day claims handling to further develop the team and book of business as a whole.
Key Skills:
- Take the lead and management of strategy on a portfolio of complex and/or high-value claims and be a point person to the relevant underwriters. Identify and discuss the most common areas and trends in claims causation. Segment and analyze the portfolio to assist in identifying the most profitable sub-segments and those areas where remedial action should be taken. Understand, monitor, provide feedback, and ensure alignment with important metrics.
- Analyze and interpret data to improve Markel’s underwriting capabilities (e.g., loss performance and underwriting efficiency). Scope out problems/questions for analysis and work with actuarial/underwriting/claims manager or head of class to investigate.
- Assist underwriters with the development of policy language to achieve desired coverage and propose wording amendments to manager and/or underwriters.
- Understand customer needs and actively seek and respond to feedback, offering solutions to problems. Build relationships beyond the claim's function, including underwriters, brokers, and key legal providers.
- Negotiate intricate coverage issues calmly and effectively in the interests of all parties. Competently represent MINT in handling market and broker meetings.
- Support the training of junior members of the claims team, offering insight into particular claims areas and aiding them in building their own skills.
- Background and knowledge in Marine Liability is required.
- You will have achieved ACII accreditation or be working towards it.
