Description
About the Role
Floor & Decor is building a dedicated Application Platforms team to give our software development teams the capabilities they need to build, deploy, and run applications reliably and securely. As the founding leader of this team, you will set the platform strategy, hire and develop the engineers, and personally build the first generation of services.
This is a player-coach role. In the early months you will be hands-on, designing pipelines, configuring tooling, and solving problems alongside your team, while laying the foundation for a larger organization. You will shape the team's charter, technology choices, operating model, and culture from day one.
📍Location: Store Support Center (SSC) in Atlanta - This is an in-office role, 3-days per week (Mon/Tues/Thurs). Please note this is not a remote position.
Where the Team Will Focus
The team will grow into five platform functions, in phases:
Phase 1: Foundation (start here)
- CI/CD: Continuous integration and delivery tooling such as Jenkins, GitHub, and Argo, plus shared pipeline services and pipeline review. Partners with Internal Audit to ensure delivery processes meet SOX requirements.
- Development Tools: The developer toolchain, including IDEs, testing frameworks, spec-driven development (SDD) tooling, application frameworks (e.g., Spring for Java), and security scanning.
Phase 2: Visibility
- Observability: Monitoring, alerting, and incident response tooling such as Dynatrace, Grafana, and OpsGenie, so teams can detect and respond to issues quickly.
Phase 3: Scale (as the team grows)
- Runtime: The application hosting layer above the operating system, primarily containers orchestrated on Kubernetes.
- Integration: Services that let applications work together, including API management, MCP management, messaging, streaming, SFTP, and ETL.
Responsibilities
- Set the vision, roadmap, and operating model for Application Platforms, treating the platform as a product with developers as customers
- Roll up your sleeves to design, build, and operate early CI/CD and developer tooling capabilities while the team is small
- Recruit, hire, and grow a team of platform engineers; coach and develop the associate engineer on the team today
- Sequence work deliberately across the five functions, making clear build, buy, and partner decisions as capacity grows
- Partner with application development leaders to gather requirements and feedback, and to measure platform adoption and developer experience
- Work with Internal Audit and Security to maintain SOX-compliant change and deployment controls without slowing delivery
- Manage vendor and tool relationships, including licensing, renewals, and roadmap alignment
- Define and track service levels, reliability targets, and cost for platform services
- Collaborate with Infrastructure, Security, Data, and Enterprise Architecture on standards and shared capabilities
- Establish documentation, self-service patterns, and golden paths that reduce the load on the platform team
What Success Looks Like
- First 90 days: Assess the current CI/CD and developer tooling landscape, build relationships with development teams, and publish a prioritized roadmap
- First 6 months: Deliver visible improvements to pipelines and developer tooling, establish SOX-aligned controls with Internal Audit, and hire the first engineers
- First year: Measurable gains in developer experience and deployment reliability, observability capabilities underway, and a plan and capacity in place to take on Runtime and Integration
Qualifications
Required
- [10+] years in software engineering, platform engineering, DevOps, or SRE, with [3+] years leading engineers or technical teams

- Strong grasp of developer tooling and engineering practices, including testing frameworks, application frameworks, and security scanning in the pipeline
- Working knowledge of observability practices and tools (e.g., Dynatrace, Grafana, OpsGenie)
- Working knowledge of Kubernetes and container-based runtimes
- Familiarity with integration patterns and technologies such as APIs, messaging, and streaming
- Demonstrated ability to build a team from a small base, set priorities, and deliver with limited resources
