WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR I (PROVISIONAL)

Incumbents to positions in this class assist in the operation and/or maintenance of equipment and machinery in a sewage treatment plant.   Duties are not as complex and responsible as that of a Wastewater Operator II, who is the primary operator in the plant.  Work requires incumbents to have mechanical aptitude in order to repair and overhaul electrical and mechanical equipment in the plant.  The activities performed by incumbents are thing-orientated and are governed in accordance with established procedures and written operating procedures for the sewage treatment plant and any guidelines set by the regulating agencies.  Duties are performed in either a Primary or Secondary Sewage Treatment Plant.  Immediate supervision is received from the Shift Superintendent (Sewage Treatment) or Wastewater Operator II.  There are no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Assists in the operation of a variety of equipment and machinery in a sewage treatment plant;

- monitors gauges, meters, control panels and plant SCADA system;

- takes samples of sewage components as required by regulating agencies;

- tends digestion tanks, raw feed boxes, lime slakers and other related equipment;

- maintains daily log and records of meter and gauge readings, samples taken, etc.;

Assists in repairing, adjusting and overhauling of equipment and machinery including but not limited to pumps, blowers, compressors, conveyors, sludge controls, air diffuses, filters, chemical equipment, valves and other mechanical and electrical equipment;

- oils and greases machinery and gears to keep them in peak operating condition;

- cleans plant units such as screens, grit removal units, aeration tanks and equipment, pumps, etc.

- performs minor repairs and replaces small parts in pumps lines and other equipment using hand tools;

Performs routine plant maintenance and cleaning work in assigned area;

Performs related work as required.

Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Laborer I or Laborer II in the non-competitive class for at least two years.
