Senior Data Architect - School of Medicine
The Senior Data Architect develops, maintains, and oversees the data infrastructure, semantic models, data-quality processes, role-based security, and AI-ready data products that support the School of Medicine’s evaluation, reporting, accreditation monitoring, and continuous quality improvement functions. This position works closely with analytics, evaluation, curriculum, assessment, student progress, IT, and institutional partners to ensure that mission, strategic plan, accreditation, course evaluation, survey, and aggregate student performance evidence can be accessed, secured, refreshed, validated, and used reliably. This position crafts long-term technical strategies, emphasizing strategic development and alignment with School of Medicine and University objectives. This position works in close collaboration with the School of Medicine Office of Technology and the BYU Office of Information Technology.
This position is important to the success of the BYU School of Medicine, a newly established organization within the university. As the school continues to launch and grow, a successful candidate must demonstrate adaptability and a willingness to take on evolving responsibilities and assignments to support its effective implementation and ongoing operations. The School of Medicine is looking for someone who is mission-aligned and will support the vision to foster a spiritually enriching environment where employees and students can deepen their testimonies of Jesus Christ while preparing students for a lifetime of service as Christ-centered physicians.
What you’ll do in this position:
Technical and Architectural Strategy
- Design, develop, maintain, and provide strategic oversight for the trusted educational data architecture to support the objectives of the Office of Analytics and Evaluation.
- Build semantic models and curated data structures that support dashboards, reports, accreditation monitoring, CQI tracking, survey reporting, and student outcomes analysis.
- Translate evidence needs related to mission fulfillment, strategic priorities, accreditation compliance, program evaluation, course evaluations, and student performance into reliable data models and reporting structures
- Develop and maintain data dictionaries, metric definitions, measure logic, and documentation to support consistent interpretation and use
- Ensure data products are structured to support accurate, explainable, confidential, and secure analysis.
- Design, develop, and maintain trusted educational data architecture to support operational areas of the School of Medicine as assigned.
Data Integration and Quality
- Develop and maintain automated data integration, transformation, and refresh processes.
- Partner with SoM IT, OIT, CTL, Registrar, Curriculum and Assessment, Student Progress, and others to support reliable source-system connections and data flows.
- Build and maintain data-quality checks, reconciliation processes, exception reports, and validation workflows.
- Identify data inconsistencies, missing data, data definition conflicts, or reporting risks and coordinate resolution with appropriate stakeholders.
- Support automation of recurring reporting workflows to reduce manual reporting burden and improve reliability.
- Establish systems and directives for performance monitoring of software and system architectures.
- Research, inform, and direct on architectural changes for compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and security/privacy mandates.
Reporting Infrastructure and Security
- In cooperation with IT, build and maintain the technical infrastructure, semantic models, data pipelines, refresh processes, role-based security, and reusable dashboard/reporting frameworks that support office analytics products.
- Configure role-based access and security structures consistent with approved data governance, confidentiality, de-identification, and appropriate-use standards.
- Support dashboards and reports for committees, curricular review, strategic plan monitoring, accreditation monitoring, and other school needs.
- Ensure dashboards and reports include clear definitions, appropriate filters, data limitations, and refresh information.
- Maintain report dependencies, version control, and technical documentation for major analytics products.
Analytics Enablement and Responsible Use
- Prepare data products, reporting structures, and governance frameworks that support responsible self-service and AI-assisted analytics.
- Collaborate with office staff and school stakeholders to understand reporting needs, translate questions into technical requirements, and support appropriate use of analytics products.
- Help faculty, staff, and other stakeholders develop the skills and confidence to create, interpret, and communicate analytics using approved tools, data sources, and standards.
- Lead and coordinate advanced troubleshooting with users and stakeholders and resolve issues during design and implementation.
- Develop reusable templates, documentation, data dictionaries, and guidance that promote consistent use of metrics and reporting practices.
- Guide users in applying approved definitions, data-quality expectations, confidentiality requirements, and appropriate-use standards.
- Review or advise on user-created analytics when needed to confirm accuracy, consistency, and responsible interpretation.
- Monitor and evaluate opportunities to use AI-enabled tools, automation, and emerging technologies to continuously improve analytics workflows and decision support.

- Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, business intelligence, data analytics, data science, or related field with 5 years of IT architecture experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Pay Grade: 55T
Typical Starting Pay: $104,500-$135,500
The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
