Position: Development CoachCompensation: $66,300 annually

Shrub Oak International School (SOIS) is a therapeutic day and residential school for autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions. Located in northern Westchester County, Shrub Oak offers unparalleled educational opportunities for autistic students in a family-centric, supportive environment. We offer a variety of programs to meet the needs of students across the spectrum, and our curriculum is based on the most advanced and successful evidence-based clinical and academic approaches in ASD education.

As a school, SOIS maintains a smoke-free environment to ensure the health and safety of our students, employees, and community. We are a residential school located on a scenic 127-acre campus which includes multiple buildings and a working farm for student programming. The work environment will include both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Who You Are:
  • You have a passion for working with the Autism population and ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.
  • You get the job done and are capable of strategic thinking while simultaneously rolling up to your sleeves to lead and teach by example.
  • You have strong self-awareness and emotional regulation skills with the ability to make safe and reasonable decisions under pressure.
  • You have strong written communication skills, specifically involving documentation, progress notes, incident reports, and other related administrative tasks.
  • You are knowledgeable in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) and are able to prioritize proactive approaches during crisis situations.
 
Job Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate a passion for working with the Autism population and ensuring the overall safety/well-being of students and staff.
  • Report to the location of escalated students to coach staff through the situation and provide extra support, if necessary.
  • Collaborate effectively across departments and build trusting relationships with students and staff.
  • Empower all staff to confidently maneuver challenging situations with students while prioritizing the use of hands-off de-escalation strategies and guiding them in the proper use of TCIS holds.
  • Collaborate with staff to develop, review, and submit Incident Reports (IR) with professional and clinical language.
  • Driving a company vehicle may be required.
  • Facilitate the Staff Debriefing Process after a crisis occurs to collectively decide what improvements can be made.
  • Attend required meetings and trainings and remains current with training, refreshers, re-certifications, and policy/procedure updates.

Position Requirements:
  • Experience working with children and early/late adolescents on the Autism Spectrum and/or developmental disabilities is required, specifically those exhibiting challenging behaviors.
  • 3 years of relevant professional experience; previous experience working in a school, particularly a boarding program.
  • Combination of post-secondary education and/or experience working with specials needs populations as a Crisis Intervention Specialist, DSP, or related position.
  • Knowledge of and experience in crisis prevention with emphasis on de-escalation and how it is applied with the Autism population.
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to pass a DMV abstract screening is preferred.
  • Due to the nature of work in supporting our students, all job description list the physical requirements for that position
  • Our campus consists of some paved areas but primarily consists of grass, gravel paths and parking lots. Additionally, many areas of our building are fully accessible, however, as a historic building some areas are only accessible by stairs.
  • You must be able to ambulate around the campus, including hills, stairs, grass and gravel.
  • Student Facing Positions:
    • Must be able to react and move quickly during student crisis, both for the safety of the student and for the staff.
    • Must be able to run across the campus and throughout the school to catch/monitor an eloping student, and/or to remove yourself from an unsafe situation.
    • You must be able to pass TCIS (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training for Schools).
      • You must be able to bend, stretch, sit, stand, crouch or kneel for sustained periods of time if implementing a hold.
