Discover Impactful Work
As a Field Application Scientist (FAS) (m/f/d) within the BioProduction Group, you will serve as a bioprocessing domain expert, helping biotechnology and biopharmaceutical customers accelerate technology adoption, process development, and optimization across downstream workflows.
You will engage with customers on a peer-to-peer, application-focused basis, providing technical leadership and process expertise before, during, and after the sale. Acting as a trusted advisor and problem solver, you will help customers achieve compliant, efficient, and high-performing processes using Thermo Fisher Scientific solutions. You will also play an important role in shaping future innovations by capturing and communicating Voice of Customer (VOC) insights.
A Day in the Life:
Serve as a technical expert and consultant, applying deep bioprocessing knowledge across purification, filtration, and single-use technologies. Engage with customers on a peer-to-peer basis to support process development, optimization, scale-up, and technology integration across downstream workflows.
Lead pre- and post-sales technical activities, including product evaluations, proof-of-principle (PoP) studies, technology qualification, and implementation in regulated environments. Contribute to pre-sales activities by delivering technical presentations on the features, benefits, and applications of POROS™ and CaptureSelect™ products, addressing downstream purification challenges and positioning Thermo Fisher Scientific capabilities against customer requirements.
What to expect:
- Provide comprehensive technical troubleshooting and act as an initial point of contact for product quality and performance issues, partnering with Quality, Field Service, and Technical Support to ensure timely and compliant resolution.
- Deliver technical training to internal and external audiences, including process scientists, engineers, and operators, to build capability and confidence in Thermo Fisher Scientific technologies and workflows.
- Conduct workflow consultations and GEMBA walks at customer sites to identify process improvement opportunities and align technical solutions with operational and business objectives.
- Support Bioprocessing Development Center (BDC) activities, customer trials, and on-site demonstrations, ensuring consistent technical messaging and execution excellence.
- Develop and execute customer technology adoption plans with measurable milestones, followed by utilization reviews to assess implementation, performance, and opportunities for further optimization.
- Document customer engagements and technical activities in Salesforce (SFDC), maintaining accurate records of activities, opportunities, win plans, technical risks, and mitigation actions.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Account Managers, Field Service Engineers, Technical Support, Product Management, R&D, and Quality/Regulatory teams to deliver seamless end-to-end customer outcomes.
- Capture, synthesize, and communicate Voice of Customer (VOC) insights to support product roadmaps, feature development, and best-practice content, including application notes, white papers, and case studies.
- Represent Thermo Fisher Scientific at industry conferences, workshops, webinars, and customer events, delivering workflow-based technical presentations and thought leadership.
Keys to Success:
Education
- BS, MS, or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, or a related scientific or engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant bioprocessing experience.
Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on bioprocessing experience, ideally within Process Development, with strong expertise in downstream processing.
- Demonstrated experience with downstream purification technologies, including chromatography, UF/DF, centrifugation, and related unit operations.
- Proven track record of technical engagement, process troubleshooting, and problem solving within Process Development and/or biomanufacturing environments.
- Experience supporting process scale-up, technology transfer, and process optimization from development through pilot and manufacturing scale.
- Hands-on experience with commonly used chromatography systems/skids at laboratory, pilot, and manufacturing scale, including the ability to operate systems and interpret data using commonly used chromatography software.
- Practical experience with column packing at small, pilot, and/or manufacturing scale.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Deep understanding of bioprocessing and downstream purification workflows, with the ability to translate scientific and engineering principles into practical customer solutions.
- Strong capability in process design, optimization, troubleshooting, and workflow consulting, using data-driven approaches to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Familiarity with Process Analytical Technology (PAT), Design of Experiments (DoE), and Quality by Design (QbD) principles, including relevant ICH Q8, Q9, and Q10 concepts.
- Knowledge of analytical methods used to support purification process development, including HPLC, ELISA, SDS-PAGE, and spectroscopy, with the ability to interpret and communicate analytical data.
- Proficiency with data analysis tools such as Excel and JMP; experience with scripting or additional analytical tools is an advantage.
