£60,000 - £90,000

Job Summary:

The Senior Software Engineer is a senior technical contributor responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining complex, AWS-native software systems within their area of ownership. This role combines deep hands-on software engineering expertise with strong cloud, data engineering, and AI capabilities. The Senior Software Engineer drives architectural decisions, delivers high-quality production code, and champions engineering excellence through rigorous testing, code reviews, and operational best practices.

As an AI-first engineer, they leverage AI agents, agentic workflows, and AI-assisted development tools to accelerate software delivery, automate engineering processes, and solve complex business challenges. The role requires a strong foundation in data engineering and cloud-native development, as well as the ability to build scalable, reliable, and observable systems that support modern software products and platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

Software Engineering & Technical Leadership

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure, and reliable software applications and services.
• Own the technical design and implementation of complex software systems from conception through production.
• Drive architectural decisions balancing scalability, maintainability, performance, and reliability.
• Write, review, and improve high-quality production code while promoting engineering best practices.
• Provide constructive technical guidance and code review feedback, including validation of AI-generated code.
• Champion software engineering excellence through testing, automation, documentation, and continuous improvement.

AI-Native Software Development

• Build production-grade AI agents and agentic workflows using AWS Bedrock, Anthropic/Claude, LangGraph, CrewAI, or comparable technologies.
• Apply an AI-first mindset to software development by incorporating AI-assisted tools and automation into daily engineering practices.
• Identify manual or repetitive engineering processes and transform them into scalable AI-powered solutions.
• Design, implement, and maintain evaluation frameworks for AI systems, including regression testing, evaluation datasets, LLM-as-judge methodologies, and human-in-the-loop review processes.
• Ensure AI-powered software solutions meet the same standards for quality, reliability, security, and testing as traditional software applications.

Cloud & Data Engineering

• Build and operate cloud-native software solutions utilizing AWS services such as Lambda, ECS, RDS, S3, SQS, API Gateway, and CloudWatch.
• Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines and ETL workflows using technologies such as Glue, Spark/PySpark, Kafka, or similar platforms.
• Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform or equivalent tools.
• Drive observability, monitoring, logging, and operational readiness across software platforms and services.

Key Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
• Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer designing, building, and supporting complex production systems.
• Strong hands-on software development experience using modern programming languages such as Python, Java, Node.js, or similar.
• Experience designing and implementing distributed systems, APIs, and microservices architectures.
• Extensive experience developing cloud-native applications and services within AWS environments.
• Strong background in data engineering, including data modeling, ETL development, pipeline design, and large-scale data processing.
• Demonstrated experience building and deploying production-grade AI agents and agentic systems that solve real-world business challenges.
• Required experience developing evaluation and testing frameworks for LLM and AI-agent solutions, including regression testing, evaluation datasets, and model performance validation.
• Experience leveraging AI-assisted development practices and transforming manual engineering workflows into automated solutions.
• Experience with infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines, observability tools, and operational best practices.
• Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills with the ability to influence technical decisions across teams.
