Program Lead - Basketball Coach

The McHenry Parks & Recreation Department is accepting applications for a Youth Basketball Coach. This position will supervise and facilitate basketball programs for ages 2.5-14 years old based on a seasonal calendar. Under the direct supervision of the Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor and Recreation Program Specialist, coaches are responsible for working directly with children and will support and assist their supervisor in running a controlled and organized program for participants and parents. Coaches play an integral role in the development of building strong character values in youth.


DECISION MAKING AND JUDGEMENT

1. Responsible for providing diverse program experiences for assigned group
2. Developing programs that are age-appropriate
3. Be responsible for maintaining order and discipline within program
4. Market programs to other departments & community organizations where youth are present
5. Keep program within budget through program development and participant retention 
6. Be prepared to discuss with a parent any experience a child has during program
7. Supervise volunteers while they are working, assist other staff, and follow/enforce policies set forth by supervisor

 
ADMINISTRATIVE

1. Will be at your program area and set up 15 minutes prior to start of scheduled activities
2. Prepare and administer weekly practices and program communications
3. Be present at required team games and program activities
4. Help develop group schedules and implement new games/activities
5. Be available for staff meetings, planning periods, and trainings as scheduled
6. Keep program areas clean, neat, and organized to optimize customer satisfaction
7. Maintain inventories and report any equipment problems or needs to the Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor
8. Report any incidents to the Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor and fill out any necessary paperwork within 24 hours of incident
9. Overall responsibility for maintaining all records
10. Submit attendance rosters, timesheets, and evaluations to Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor within 1 week of program ending.

 
SUPERVISION

1. Responsible for youth ages 2-17 at your program area and will be responsible for overall athlete well-being while in the care of the City of McHenry Parks & Recreation department
2. Keep accurate count of children in program at all times
3. Responsible for selecting, instructing, directing, and supervising the flow of work

 
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Must be motivated and able to implement oral and written instructions
2. Must be able to communicate respectfully and effectively with superiors, co-workers, parents, and children ages 2-17
3. Must be physically able to lift a child (if necessary)
4. Must be able to lift 50 pounds
5. Must be able to evaluate situations and make decisions within established policies and standards
6. Requires frequent lifting and moving of equipment and supplies
7. Must be able to be participate in activities
8. Knowledge and physical ability to respond in emergency situations
9. Candidate must be energetic, outgoing, and interested in being a positive role model to young children
10. Candidate must possess strong oral and interpersonal communication skills
11. Candidate must possess ability to be flexible and adjust to changing work environment
12. Candidate must possess creativity, initiative, and willingness to learn and implement new ideas
13. Candidate must be trained and certified in First Aid and CPR

 
ACCURACY

1. Requires accurate record keeping for programs

 
PARTICIPANT SAFETY

1. Review and understand all emergency drills and be prepared to implement them
2. Requires considerable attention and alertness to safety hazards
3. Must be able to take on a leadership role in matters of safety

 
PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES:

1. Fill in at various positions when there are personnel shortages, vacations, or special projects
2. Other related duties as assigned and perform all duties in a respectful and responsible manner
3. Maintains all necessary records
4. Adheres to all policies and procedures

• Must be 16 years of age or older
• Must be an example of good moral behavior
• Must have previous experience and knowledge with similar program and large/small group activities
• Supervise and facilitate youth programming/sports activities to youth ages 2-17
• Basic First Aid and CPR certification current or obtained as soon as possible
• Desire to work with children and parents daily
• Required at least 3 months working and/or volunteering with children ages 2-17
• Prefer one or more years of previous basketball experience through league, coaching, or officiating
• Willingness to project the City of McHenry image by personal adherence to all policies
• Demonstrate the ability to interpret and administer all policies, established by the City of McHenry Parks & Recreation department, to all employees and volunteers you may encounter
