Who we’re looking for
The Tax Specialist: Audit, Controversy & Defence provides technical, analytical, and administrative support to the Head of Tax: Audit, Controversy & Defence, contributing to the efficient management of tax audits, reviews, investigations, disputes, and information requests across the Group.
The role is responsible for the preparation of audit support schedules, reconciliation of tax data, management of audit documentation, and maintenance of dispute tracking systems. The incumbent plays a critical role in ensuring that information provided to tax authorities, external advisors, and internal stakeholders is accurate, complete, and submitted within agreed timelines. The role serves as a key coordination point between the Tax team, Finance, external advisors, and tax authorities, helping to minimise audit disruption and support the effective defence of the Group's tax positions.
Key Responsibilities
Audit Support and Technical Analysis
Prepare audit schedules, reconciliations, working papers, and supporting analyses required for tax audits, reviews, investigations, and information requests.
Assist in gathering and validating financial and tax data required during tax authority engagements.
Reconcile tax returns, financial reporting information, and supporting documentation to ensure consistency and accuracy.
Support the preparation of technical analyses required for audit and dispute management activities.
Assist with identifying information gaps and follow up with relevant stakeholders to obtain supporting data.
Assist in drafting responses to audit queries, requests for information, and clarification requests from tax authorities.
Coordinate the collection of supporting documentation from Finance, Legal, Operations, Commercial, and other business teams.
Ensure responses are prepared accurately and submitted within agreed timelines.
Support the Head of Tax in managing communication logs relating to audits and investigations.
Track outstanding information requests and proactively follow up with relevant stakeholders.
Manage document control processes for tax audits, disputes, reviews, and investigations.
Maintain accurate, complete, and well-organised audit files and supporting records.
Ensure timely submission of information to tax authorities, external advisors, and other stakeholders.
Establish and maintain evidence repositories for tax positions and historical audit matters.
Support compliance with internal document retention and governance requirements.
Dispute and Case Management Support
Maintain dispute trackers, audit logs, status reports, and case management records.
Monitor key deadlines and milestones relating to audits, objections, appeals, and dispute resolution processes.
Assist in tracking the progress of ongoing tax controversies and escalations.
Prepare reporting dashboards and status summaries for management review.
Ensure supporting documentation relating to disputes is accurately maintained and readily accessible.
Tax Reporting and Provisioning Support
Support data gathering and issue tracking required for tax provisioning and financial reporting processes.
Assist in identifying uncertain tax positions and maintaining supporting documentation.
Liaise with Finance teams to obtain information required for tax reporting and disclosure purposes.
Maintain records of audit adjustments, provisions, contingencies, and tax exposures.
Support the preparation of reports required for internal governance and external reporting purposes.
Stakeholder Coordination
Act as a liaison between the Tax function and internal business units for audit-related information requests.
Coordinate interactions with external tax advisors where required.
Foster effective working relationships with Finance, Legal, Compliance, and Operational teams.
Escalate issues, delays, or risks that may impact audit and dispute timelines.
Support the effective flow of information across all stakeholders involved in audit and controversy matters.
Governance and Continuous Improvement
Ensure audit and dispute management activities comply with Group governance standards and policies.
Support the identification and implementation of process improvements to enhance efficiency and document management.
Assist in developing standard templates, trackers, and reporting tools to improve audit readiness.
Contribute to maintaining a strong audit and evidence management framework across the Group.
Promote accuracy, attention to detail, and best practices in tax records management.
Qualifications
Essential
Bachelor's Degree in Taxation, Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field.
Relevant tax qualification or postgraduate tax studies advantageous.
Preferred
Postgraduate qualification in Taxation.
Registered Tax Practitioner status or progress toward a professional tax qualification.
What you’ll bring (Experience)
Essential
5 – 8 years' experience in a tax, finance, accounting, or audit-related role.
Experience preparing tax reconciliations, audit schedules, and supporting analyses.
Exposure to tax audits, tax authority engagements, or dispute management processes.
Experience working with large volumes of financial and tax-related data.
Preferred
Experience within a multinational group or professional services environment.
Exposure to corporate income tax, VAT/GST, withholding taxes, and international tax matters.
Experience using tax reporting, document management, or case management systems.
