Accountant – Insurance Agency Accounting
Our client is seeking an experienced Accountant to join their accounting team and take ownership of key day-to-day accounting functions while serving as a collaborative partner to the Accounting Manager.
This is a hands-on role with responsibility for full-charge bookkeeping and accounting functions, including direct bill and agency bill processing, accounts receivable and payable, commission accounting, general ledger activity, and journal entries. The Accountant will also provide backup support across several critical areas of the department.
The ideal candidate will bring strong accounting fundamentals, insurance agency accounting experience, and an interest in improving processes through technology and automation. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys taking ownership of their work, identifying efficiencies, and contributing to the continued development of an accounting function.
Key Responsibilities
- Process commission cash receipts and accurately record transactions
- Manage customer agency bill receipts and electronic payment transactions
- Process direct bill commission statements
- Handle agency bill payments and remittances to insurance carriers
- Prepare and post general ledger and journal entries
- Assist with account reconciliations and maintain accurate financial records
- Identify opportunities to streamline manual processes and improve accounting workflows through automation
- Partner closely with the Accounting Manager to support daily accounting operations and departmental initiatives
Additional & Backup Responsibilities
- Calculate and process commission payments to agents
- Calculate and allocate monthly expenses to agents
- Provide backup support for payroll processing for agents and agency staff
- Process vendor invoices and payments
- Complete bank reconciliations
- Assist with Human Resources and employee benefits-related functions as needed
Qualifications
- Experience with insurance agency accounting, including direct bill and agency bill processing
- Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and journal entries
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with the Accounting Manager
- Process-improvement mindset with an interest in using technology and automation to increase efficiency
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AMS360 is highly preferred
- Experience creating or modifying reports within AMS360 is a plus
- Payroll processing experience is a plus
- Previous exposure to HR or employee benefits administration is a plus
- Experience implementing automation or technology-driven process improvements is a plus
- Familiarity with AI tools and their potential application within accounting workflows is a plus
Compensation & Benefits
- Base Salary: $60,000–$70,000
