Maintenance Technician

JOB SUMMARY

This is a semi-skilled position with the City’s Pump and Motor Maintenance Department. Under general supervision from senior plant maintenance personnel, this position is responsible for performing maintenance duties such as installing, maintaining, and repairing various electrical and mechanical systems equipment used to control, pump and treat water, and sewer lift stations. 

• Make adjustments to and/or operate various electrical and mechanical systems equipment and machinery.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs various pumps, motors, regulators, flow meters, electric and hydraulic control valves and other related equipment and machinery.
• Assists other maintenance personnel with the maintenance, repair, installation and inspection of various plant electrical and mechanical systems and equipment.
• Performs weekly maintenance and inspection of various pump/lift station equipment and machinery.
• Performs various plant housekeeping and facilities maintenance duties including general shop cleanup and grounds maintenance duties.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of: 

• Basic operating and maintenance requirements of industrial use pumps, motors, valves, switches, meters and other related process control equipment.
• Basic principles of industrial plant electrical and mechanical equipment maintenance.
• Methods, materials and tools commonly used in industrial plant maintenance operations.
• Safe work habits and practices associated with working in an industrial plant environment.
• Basic arithmetic.
• Basic operation of Personal Computers and associated operating systems.

Ability to:

• Safely and effectively, operate required equipment, machinery and tools to complete assigned tasks.
• Utilize required PPE, including special fitted full-face respirator. 
• Understand and carry out both written and verbal work instructions.
• Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under variable weather conditions.
• Perform basic arithmetic calculations and maintain accurate maintenance records.
• Learn all aspects of plant maintenance operations and water treatment process.
• Read, write and speak the English language.
• Ability to grasp, lift, carry and set down heavy (75lbs or more) objects repeatedly, on a daily basis without assistance. 
• Work various shifts including days, evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays and on-call as required. 

Experience and Education: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required level of knowledge, skills and abilities will qualify.

Experience:

• Previous work experience performing maintenance and repair work on industrial use pumps, motors, valves, switches and/or other related mechanical and electrical systems and equipment.
• Previous water treatment process and/or maintenance work experience is highly desirable.

Education: 

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Completion of any accredited course of instruction regarding water treatment processes and/or any other related formal training is highly desirable.

Licenses/Certifications:

• Possession of a valid Class “C” Motor Vehicle Operators License.
• Possession of a Class “D” water license within 6 months from date of hire. 
• Must obtain Class “C” surface water license and Class “C” ground water license before the Class “D” license expires or within 36 months from date of hire. 

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

The duties of this position are performed both in an industrial plant environment and an outdoor field environment exposing incumbents assigned to this position to a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, rain and prolonged exposure to the sun. Incumbents assigned to this position must be physically capable of utilizing required PPE, including special fitted full-face respirator, physically capable visually observing and monitoring electronic and other recording devices. Incumbents must also be physically capable of hearing auditory warning devices such as alarms used to monitor reservoir levels and pump operations. Incumbents assigned to this position can reasonably expect to be exposed to various solvents and hazardous chemicals used to clean and maintain equipment as well as those used as part of the water treatment process. Some work may take place in small, cramped areas such as pump stations and valve vaults requiring that the incumbent be able to ascend and descend ladders, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, and reach above shoulder height to reach all areas of assigned work area. Additionally, incumbents must be physically capable of carrying tools and equipment weighing up to 75lbs without assistance. The essential duties of this position also require that the incumbent be capable of climbing ladders up to 60 feet in order to check reservoir and/or tank levels. 

This position has been classified as a “safety-sensitive” position. All incumbents assigned to a “safety-sensitive” position shall be required to comply with all provisions of the City of Sherman, Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
