Recreation Leader (Part-Time, Seasonal Position)
 Seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits, vacation or holiday pay. Position is temporary, at-will.

Work Schedule
September 28 - October 9, 2026; December 21-23, 2026; December 28-30, 2026; March 15-19, 2027 & May 31- August 13, 2027. Monday- Friday with work hours between 6:45 a.m. - 6:15 p.m. (Up to 30 hours per week).

The Position
The Recreation Leader is the entry level support class responsible for providing support to recreation staff for the
implementation of a wide variety of recreation break camps (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer) and is responsible for general custodial and facility related concerns. The ideal candidate will demonstrate high energy, dependability, attentiveness and the ability to multitask.

Incorporated in 1989, the City of Lathrop is located in the Northern San Joaquin Valley and sits east and west of the San Joaquin River. Interstate 5, Interstate 205, and State Route 120 intersect within the city.   We are located approximately 70 miles east of San Francisco and 70 miles south of Sacramento.  Monterey, Santa Cruz, Napa Valley, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains are all located within 2 hours of Lathrop. Lathrop is centrally located within a 30-minute commute of Tracy, Manteca, Stockton, Ripon, Lodi, Modesto, and Livermore. 

The Department’s January 1, 2026, population estimates show Lathrop grew from 38,791 residents in 2025 to 40,942 residents in 2026, an increase of 2,151 people, or 5.5%. The report ranks Lathrop as the second fastest-growing city in California with a population over 30,000, behind only Mountain House. Lathrop also ranked fifth among California cities under 300,000 residents for the largest numeric population increase. With the continued growth in the residential communities, our population is anticipated to reach approximately 70,000.


Essential Functions Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assists in monitoring and leading recreational activities such as group games, arts and crafts, camp songs, science experiments and other summer activities.
  • Help check in/out participants
  • Enforce safety policies
  • Deliver clear instructions
  • Communicate effectively with parents, participants and staff
Supervision Exercised/Received
Receives general supervision from a Recreation Supervisor and/or Recreation Coordinator. May receive lead and/or functional supervision from a Senior Recreation Leader. Incumbents may be required to routinely assist supervision of programs or facilities.

Education and/or Experience
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Recreation Leader.  A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of one year of experience implementing recreation programs or events, and a high school diploma or equivalent.
Physical Working Conditions
Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in preparing reports using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading written reports and work related documents. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper and documents weighing up to 25 pounds also is required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot and cold.
