About the role

We are currently looking for a Casualty Claims Adjuster II to join our team in the Calgary, Edmonton or Vancouver office.

This is a permanent full-time hybrid position and requires a minimum of 2 days per week working in the office.

Effective January 1, 2027, Alberta is transitioning to a new Care-First auto insurance system. This significant change will introduce a no-fault model, enhanced medical benefits, limitations on the right to sue following an accident, changes to the insurance rating system, and strict rate caps.

During this transition, you will begin your role as a Casualty Claims Adjuster II, managing automobile bodily injury claims and supporting customers through complex and often stressful circumstances. You will be responsible for investigating claims, making evidence-based decisions, managing financial exposures, and delivering timely, fair outcomes.

As part of your career development, you will receive additional training with the potential to transition to the Care First Team in late 2027 or early 2028. In that role, you will continue to use your claims experience while applying a more health- and recovery-focused approach to supporting injured customers.

This opportunity is well suited to an experienced casualty adjuster who is interested in developing expertise in accident benefits, medical terminology, eligibility and entitlement determinations, and customer-centered recovery outcomes.

What you’ll do here:

As a Casualty Claims Adjuster II, you will:

  • Investigate automobile bodily injury claims to support prompt, fair resolution.
  • Use sound judgment to make independent decisions, assess risk, think critically, and prioritize effectively.
  • Review and analyze medical records, police reports, expert reports, and other relevant documentation.
  • Represent the company in negotiations and settlements with third parties, claimants, and/or legal counsel.
  • Manage claims through the litigation process, where required.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely claim file documentation in accordance with company standards, policies, and guidelines.
  • Set, review, and manage loss and expense reserves, ensuring accuracy and reserve integrity.
  • Evaluate settlement criteria and authorize payments in accordance with policy, legislation, authority levels, and best practices.
  • Communicate professionally and empathetically with customers, brokers, service providers, lawyers, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate effectively with Claims Assignment, Collections, Underwriting, Appraisal, Legal, and other internal departments.
  • Manage a high-volume workload while maintaining quality, accuracy, service standards, and a sense of urgency.

As you transition to the Care First Team, you will:

  • Support injured customers with a health- and recovery-focused approach rather than a purely transactional claims mindset.
  • Assess eligibility and entitlement using policy provisions, legislation, medical information, and available evidence.
  • Apply analytical and evidence-based decision-making to accident benefits claims.
  • Review medical information and use medical terminology to understand a claimant’s injuries, treatment needs, functional limitations, and recovery goals.
  • Engage with claimants using active listening, empathy and clear communication.
  • Help customers navigate complex and stressful situations while providing timely, respectful, and consistent support.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers, rehabilitation professionals, employers, legal representatives, and other stakeholders involved in the claimant’s recovery.
  • Identify opportunities for early intervention and appropriate support while maintaining sound claim and financial management practices.
  • Continue developing your technical knowledge through training, coaching, feedback, and ongoing professional development.

What you bring to the table:

  • A minimum of two years of experience handling casualty claims, preferably involving automobile bodily injury.
  • A CIP designation preferred, or a demonstrated commitment to pursuing one.
  • Post-secondary education in a health-related discipline, insurance, business, or a related field is an asset.
  • Experience working with medical terminology or in a healthcare, rehabilitation, disability, or medical setting is an asset.
  • A customer focused approach, with the ability to communicate with empathy and professionalism in stressful situations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and professionally.
  • Strong investigative, analytical, and critical-thinking skills.
  • The ability to make well-reasoned, evidence-based decisions using medical, policy, and other claim-related information.
  • Strong negotiation and conflict-resolution skills, with a collaborative approach focused on fair and sustainable outcomes.
  • The ability to de-escalate difficult conversations and remain calm, professional, and emotionally aware in stressful situations.
  • Strong system navigation skills and the ability to use technology efficiently in a high-volume environment.
  • A growth-oriented attitude and openness to coaching, feedback, continued learning, and changing business processes.

Why this opportunity matters:

This role offers the opportunity to build on your casualty claims expertise while developing the skills required for Alberta’s evolving auto insurance environment. You will gain experience supporting customers through the transition to Care First and will be positioned to contribute to a team focused on timely decisions, compassionate service, recovery, and positive customer outcomes.

Please note: Successful candidates will be expected to participate in the training and development required to transition into the Care First Team in late 2027 or early 2028, subject to business and operational requirements.

This job posting will close on Friday September 18th, 2026 at 11:59 pm MST.
