Description

Under general direction, supervises, leads, and directs small crew in the maintenance, repair, and construction of parks, park amenities, public grounds, irrigation systems, plant material, athletic fields; plans, organizes projects, and performs related work as required. Coordinates activities of assigned crew and repairs, maintains construction activities, sees that necessary materials, tools and equipment are maintained in good and safe working condition and are scheduled for use and returned meeting departmental standards; enforces department rules and policies and special orders; makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ensure quality and completion of assigned work. Uses hand tools such as saws, bolt cutters, picks, shovels, mops, brooms, pump sprayers, ladders, and a variety of other assorted hand tools. Also uses various power tools, air compressors, utility vehicles, mowers, weed-eaters, edger’s, paint rigs, top dressers, aerator, tractors and associated attachments, and other departmental and rented equipment. Train subordinates to perform most park maintenance operations in a safe fashion meeting or exceeding departmental standards.
Ensures that proper equipment and materials are available; inspects equipment and performs preventative maintenance as required; completes service requests, work orders and maintains records and reports as required for assigned area of responsibility.
Maintains a variety of inventory, maintenance records, initiates purchase requisitions for needed supplies and equipment; supervises routine and preventive maintenance/repair of play structures, fences, athletic fields, benches, irrigation systems, tables, athletic nets and equipment, pavilions, restrooms, park buildings and other associated park amenities. Operates machinery and equipment when needed, prepares and maintains records as required.
Performs other duties as assigned. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential function of this position, as is the ability to create and maintain professional, harmonious working relationships with others.Graduation from High School or GED required. Must have three (3) years of related experience, supervisory experience preferred.
Good knowledge of work performed in assigned area of responsibility such as: ground maintenance, irrigation maintenance, athletic field maintenance and renovation, horticulture, and best turf cultural maintenance practices.
Ability to provide leadership; assign responsibilities, coordinate, monitor and follow through on job assignments; ability to operate related equipment as required; ability to plan, supervise and evaluate operations and maintenance; ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with co-workers, other departments/divisions and the public. Ability to perform site inspections, play equipment inspections, and identify any deficiencies. Skilled in customer service, and possess the ability to represent the city in a positive and professional fashion. Basic knowledge, skills and abilities may be required for assigned area of responsibility.
Valid driver's license required. Must have and maintain a good driving record in accordance with the driving standards as established by the City of Rowlett. Must report all traffic citations to his/her departmental Director or his/her designee within two working days of receipt.
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred. Must possess or obtain within 12 months, at least one (1) licenses/certification from the following list: Class “A” Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator License, Certified Arborist, TCEQ Licensed Irrigator, TCEQ Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester License, Certified Playground Safety Inspector License. Any license/certification that is not listed in this section must be pre-approved as a valid substitute by the Department Director.
Must be able to stand and walk on asphalt, gravel, grass, and wet and dry soil. Must be able to handle and operate majority of landscape tools and equipment which includes shovels, rakes, motorized equipment and basic hand tools. Must be able to lift and carry various types of landscape equipment and debris (up to 80 lbs.). This position requires pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, vision, sitting, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, climbing, balancing, hearing, talking and foot controls in order to operate equipment and perform essential job duties. Exposed to various weather conditions, including hot, cold, wet, icy, and/or humid situations. Works in or near road traffic and heights. Works with power equipment, mowers, and chainsaws.
