Field Engineer

Under general supervision, responsible for the civil engineering field work performed by the City Engineering Division.  The Field Engineer performs related work as required.

Position Title: Field Engineer

Position Duties:

Work Location: The City of Detroit , 2 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48226

Rate of Pay: $108,514.00/year

Work Hours: 8 AM to 5 PM

Direct a group of technical assistants to survey established permanent benchmarks, establish line and grade for various construction projects, and make land surveys for records, mapping, and assessments. Supervise inspections performed by subordinates to ensure compliance with plans and specifications on contract and departmental construction work. Ensure inspections for public sewers, sewer outlets, water mains and tunnels, pumping stations, various types of buildings and structures, paving, and other construction work. Test construction materials and take test borings of subsoils. Plan, assign, and schedule the work of subordinates. Check reports and completed work for satisfactory performance. Consult with department heads, contractors and the public regarding services rendered and interpretation of data, rules, and specifications. Suggest changes and/or improvements and approve or disapprove construction work. Authorize payments to contractors based on percentage of completion of project and contract changes. Resolve inspection concerns and disputes. Review time books and payroll. Order field equipment and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications: US Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, plus five (5) years of progressively responsible, post-baccalaureate experience as a field/civil engineering professional.

Special Skills Requirement: Must have experience in each of the following skills: surveying and testing methods for municipal construction work; surveying instrument utilization; interpretation of plans and specifications to analyze testing and inspection data; and report preparation.

Licenses, Certifications and Other Special Requirements:
Must be a registered professional engineer in the State of Michigan
Valid State of Michigan Operator License required
