Position Summary

The Senior Communications Specialist is a strategic and hands-on communications professional responsible for developing and executing communications that build understanding, strengthen employee engagement, and align the organization around the priorities of Apogee Architectural Metals. This individual contributor partners closely with Human Resources, business leaders, and cross-functional teams to translate business strategy, leadership direction, and organizational change into clear, relevant, and actionable messages.

The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and skilled communicator who serves as a trusted advisor to leaders and stakeholders across the organization. The role requires sound judgment, business acumen, attention to detail, and a strong sense of ownership for communication outcomes from planning and content development through execution and follow-through. Success requires adapting communications to different leaders, audiences, and channels while remaining accountable for ensuring messages are understood and support the intended organizational outcome.

Key Responsibilities

Executive & Leadership Communications

• Support senior leaders in developing communication approaches and messaging that align with business priorities and organizational objectives.

• Translate executive direction, ideas, presentations, and discussions into clear employee messaging, talking points, FAQs, presentations, leader tools, and other communication materials.

• Provide practical communication guidance, ask clarifying questions, and recommend adjustments that improve clarity, consistency, and audience relevance.

• Adapt messaging to reflect established leadership preferences and communication styles while maintaining quality and consistency.

 

Employee Communications & Engagement

• Develop and execute employee communication plans and programs that build awareness, understanding, connection, and engagement across locations and functions.

• Write and edit executive messages, employee announcements, newsletters, SharePoint content, leadership updates, stories, and recurring communications.

• Ensure communications are clear, accessible, and relevant for both office and production employees, using channels appropriate for each audience.

• Support initiatives that strengthen employee experience, culture, recognition, transparency, and organizational alignment.

 

Communication Planning, Content & Channels

• Develop and manage communication plans, editorial calendars, timelines, and deliverables for business initiatives and ongoing communication programs.

• Maintain and coordinate content across employee communication channels, including SharePoint sites, newsletters, websites, recurring communications, town halls, print, digital boards, and other platforms.

• Develop employee stories, business updates, recognition content, employer brand materials, and external-facing content as needed.

• Partner with Human Resources, Operations, Marketing, IT, Apogee Corporate Communications, and other business leaders to align messages and support effective delivery.

• Recommend practical improvements to communication standards, templates, channel use, content quality, reach, and engagement.

 

Experience & Skills

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field

 

Experience

• Minimum of 8 years' progressive communications experience, preferably in a business, industrial, manufacturing, operations, or similarly complex environment.
• Demonstrated experience developing and executing communication plans and managing complex, cross-functional communication assignments.

• Experience supporting senior leaders and translating direction, input, and complex business information into clear communications.

• Experience creating content for multiple formats and channels, including email, SharePoint, Teams, presentations, digital content, video scripts, print, and visual assets.

 

Required Skills

• Exceptional writing and editing skills with strong attention to clarity, tone, accuracy, accessibility, and audience needs.

• Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to independently manage deadlines, details, competing priorities, and changing demands.

• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and sound judgment.

• Ability to build trusted relationships, listen for leadership intent, and distill complex information into focused, audience-appropriate messaging.

• Working knowledge of communication planning, employee engagement, leadership communications, and change communication principles.

• Advanced PowerPoint skills, with the ability to build polished, visually compelling, audience-appropriate presentations, executive decks, and leader communication materials.

• Experience with tools such as SharePoint, Canva, ContactMonkey, InDesign, Microsoft Office, Teams, and AI-enabled communication tools preferred.

 

Work Environment/Travel Requirements

• Primarily office-based with regular partnership across leaders, functions, and locations through in-person and virtual communication.

• Occasional travel to Architectural Metals or Apogee locations may be required for meetings, events, communication planning, content gathering, or project support.

• May spend time in manufacturing or production environments to understand employee communication needs and support effective frontline communication.

Salary range is $90,000 - $110,000 + annual bonus opportunity
