• Apply technical expertise to governance, assurance and continuous improvement initiatives with broad business reach.

• Be based in Perth, with access to a modern city office, public transport and amenities that support wellbeing and work-life balance.

We’re Finding Better Ways™ to provide materials the world needs, now and in the future. Our values - care, courage and curiosity - guide how we work and how we treat each other.

About the role

We are looking for a Specialist Safety to provide technical knowledge, governance and continuous improvement support across safety standards, critical risk management and operational learning. The role supports work health and safety compliance and uses data insights and industry practice to identify improvement opportunities.

Reporting to the Principal Safety, you will work with operational and technical teams to strengthen governance, monitoring, reporting and safety management systems. This is an opportunity to influence practical safety outcomes across a complex, large-scale operating environment.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Principal Safety and working across Safety Technical and Assurance, operational teams and functional partners, you will be:

• Govern safety compliance and legislative codes of practice by monitoring requirements and embedding changes into processes and documentation.

• Manage recurring safety governance and reporting processes, including accurate coordination, stakeholder engagement and compliance activities.

• Coordinate safety governance forums, reviews, analysis and recommendations that support informed decisions.

Monitor critical risk control effectiveness through assurance activities, governance reporting and performance analysis.

• Support the development and maintenance of safety management systems, standards, documentation and processes.

Provide subject matter advice on safety and work health and safety requirements to operational and technical teams.

• Lead continuous improvement initiatives and communicate positive safety practices across teams and communities of practice.

• Collaborate with regulators, industry bodies, technical partners and education institutions to incorporate relevant practice and learning.

About you

We’re looking for someone whose experience aligns with the key requirements below. You do not need to meet every “helpful for success” item to apply. If you bring relevant experience and are excited by the opportunity, we encourage you to submit an application.

Required for Success

• A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.

• A tertiary qualification in health and safety or a Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety with substantial relevant technical experience.

• Sound understanding of safety management systems and their practical application in a complex operational environment.

Demonstrated capability in safety governance, compliance, assurance, reporting and critical risk control monitoring.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, including the use of data and insights to identify improvement opportunities.

• Experience consulting, advising and influencing leaders, peers and external stakeholders.

Helpful for Success

• Knowledge of Rio Tinto safety fundamentals, fatal risk prevention or critical risk standards and practices.

• Experience facilitating working groups, governance forums or cross-functional safety initiatives.

• Change leadership, planning and stakeholder engagement experience.

What we offer

Be recognised for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you’ve helped the world progress.

• A work environment where safety is always the number one priority.

• A permanent position working directly for Rio Tinto.

• A competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience with annual incentive program.

• Comprehensive medical benefits including subsidised private health insurance for employees and immediate family.

• Attractive share ownership plan.

• Company provided insurance cover.

• Extensive salary sacrifice and salary packaging options.

• Career development and education assistance to further your technical or leadership ambitions.

• Ongoing access to family-friendly health and medical wellbeing support.

• Leave for all of life’s reasons, including annual, paid parental, personal and cultural leave.

• Exclusive employee discounts across banking, accommodation, cars, retail and more.

• Possible domestic relocation assistance.

Where you’ll be working

This role is based in Perth, Western Australia. Our modern office in the Central Park tower provides an inspiring environment for collaboration and professional growth. You will have access to a modern gym, wellness programmes and convenient amenities that support a healthy work-life balance. Situated in the heart of Perth, the office is close to public transport and several parking options.
